New Delhi, Oct 23 : A young man was arrested on the charge of stealing the purse of a woman in south Delhi, police said on Monday.

Police said Suraj, 21, of Madangir in south Delhi had stolen a purse from a woman's car near Dhaula Peer on the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road on Saturday, following which he was arrested from the NBCC Plaza in Pushp Vihar in south Delhi.

Complainant Arti Bhadawan of Sarita Vihar was driving back home from Gurugram when her car's tyre got punctured. As she got down, two persons, one of them later identified as Suraj, stopped their two-wheeler near her and stole her purse lying in the car, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh said.

During checking at the NBCC Plaza, a constable stopped the two youths carrying the purse. While Suraj was arrested, his accomplice fled the spot.

"The woman's mobile phone, Rs 55,000, two bank passbooks, and other documents were seized from Suraj, apart from an iron tool used to puncture vehicles of targeted persons," the officer added.

Suraj told police he was involved in 12 robberies.
