New Delhi, Sep 5 : A man who distributed stolen electricity to over 700 consumers in Delhi's Nangloi area has been sentenced to two years simple imprisonment and fined Rs 57 lakh, discom BSES said on Tuesday, Special Courts at Dwarka and Karkardooma have convicted a resident each at Nangloi (west Delhi) and Seelampur (east Delhi) of large scale power theft, a BSES statemnt said.

The Special Court at Dwarka convicted Om Prakash for distributing stolen electricity to over 700 consumers in Bakkarwala in Nangloi. He got two years in jail and was fined Rs 57 lakh.

The Special Court of Karkardooma convicted Shiv Mangal of Seelampur for power theft. BSES said he was caught stealing over 30 KW for industrial purposes.

"The BSES inspection team was accompanied by Delhi Police. Subsequently, a power theft bill of Rs 1.24 lakh was raised, which the accused did not pay," a BSES spokesperson said.

In July, a young engineer lost his life and four other officials were seriously injured when they were attacked by power thieves.

Earlier this year, the BSES announced the sentencing of three offenders to jail terms and cumulative fines of over Rs 55 lakh.
