Shillong, Aug 2 : The Fifth Meghalaya Pay Commission on Wednesday recommended a pay hike by 25.6 percent to state government employees and pensioners, an official said.

The three-member pay panel headed by former Chief Secretary Peter James Bazeley submitted its report to Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

"We have submitted our reports to the Chief Minister. We would not like to comment on it," Bazeley told journalists after emerging from the Chief Minister's Office.

A government official said the government will be incurring an extra-burden of over Rs 100 crore monthly if the recommendations of the pay panel are implemented in toto.

The number of government employees in the state is over 11 lakh, which includes teachers of deficit schools and colleges besides 23,000 pensioners.
