New Delhi, July 10 : A 36-year-old criminal has been arrested in Delhi for attempting to kill a member of a rival gang, police said on Monday.

Narender, who is a resident of Tughlakabad area, was arrested on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday during a routine vehicle checking at Loha-Mandi in west Delhi's Naraina area, police said.

"The police teams spotted an auto rickshaw coming from Ring Road side to Loha-Mandi area. When signalled to stop, the driver, instead of stopping, reversed the vehicle in a bid to escape," Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said.

"Police started to chase it and succeeded in apprehending Narender, while his associates Tarun and another person managed to escape in the auto," he added.

During investigation, it was found that Narender and his associates had on Friday night fired two rounds at Vishal, a member of a rival gang, over previous animosity.

Two years ago, Vishal had attempted to kill Tarun to show his dominance of illegal activities in south Delhi, the DCP said.

"During interrogation, Narender disclosed that he is a criminal and a land mafia. He has been involved in eight cases of murder and attempt to murder over property disputes. He was arrested in two cases of murder in Govindpuri area. In one of the cases, he had shot three persons but was acquitted after witnesses turned hostile.

"He along with Tarun deals in disputed properties in Neb Sarai, Tughlakadbad and Govindpuri area. He purchases these properties on half or less than the actual market rate," the officer added.
