Sehore (Madhya Pradesh), June 29 : Two more farmers committed suicide on Thursday reportedly due to debt in Madhya Pradesh, taking the total number of such farmer deaths to 31 in over a fortnight.
Mariya Barela, 50, committed suicide by hanging himself in his farm in Imli Kheda under the limits of Bilkisganj Police Station in Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's home district Sehore.
His relatives claimed that he was under debt, police said.
This is the seventh suicide case in Chouhan's home district.
Another farmer Gulab Singh, 52, hanged himself in Sandia village in Hoshangabad district.
He had a debt of Rs 2 lakh due to which he was tense, said his family.
"We have recovered the farmer's suicide note but it is not written as to why he ended his life. We are probing the case," Pipariya Police Station Incharge Keerat Dhuvre said.
The other farmers, who committed suicide this month in the Chief Minister's assembly constituency, include Shatrughan Meena, Bansi Lal, Dulichandra, Mukesh Yadav, Khaju Khan and Babulal.
Farmers in Madhya Pradesh had launched a protest earlier this month demanding better prices for their produce and debt relief.
On June 6, six farmers were killed in police firing in Mandsaur. Though the protest was called off following intervention by the government, farmers have been ending their lives over debt and other problems.
