Ghaziabad, June 20 : A nine-year-girl, who fell into the Hindon canal here on Tuesday, and a 15 year-old youth who jumped in to save her, were drowned, police said.
The incident occurred canal near Vaishali sector 5, under Indirapuram police station, in the evening.
According to police, at about 5.30 p.m., a girl of a nearby locality came to play along the canal but slipped and fell into the water.
The teenager saw her fall in and jumped in to rescue her. But the flow was so fast that he could not manage and also got swept away.
Local residents informed the police, who called in National Disaster Response Force personnel and divers to rescue the victims. However, they could only recovere their bodies.
The youth was identified as Suraj, a resident of Hardoi presently residing in Makanpur while the girl's name could not be known since her family members refused to reveal it.
"Both the bodies have been sent for postmortem," said Superintendent of Police, City, Akash Tomar.
