Rio De Janeiro, March 18 : Brazilian football club Vasco da Gama has sacked coach Cristovao Borges after a poor run of results, the Rio de Janeiro club said.

Friday's announcement followed Vasco's 0-1 loss to Vitoria in the third-round of the Copa do Brasil on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Vasco appreciate the work done by (Cristovao), who always showed great dedication," the club said in a brief statement.

Borges, 57, led the four-time Brazilian Serie A champions to five wins, four losses and two draws during his second spell in charge of the club.

Among those in the running to replace him are former Real Madrid and Brazil boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo, journeyman manager Ricardo Gomes and Rogerio Micale, who led Brazil to the football gold medal at last year's Rio Olympics.
