Bratislava, Jan 11 : Slovakia's former politician and actor Milan Knazko shot a robber who tried to rob his villa here on Wednesday.

"That's correct, a burglar was there," Knazko was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

He, however, refused to provide any further details about the incident, as a police investigation was still pending.

The Slovak news website Cas.sk reported earlier in the day that Knazko mounted resistance to the burglar and shot him with a handgun.

Jozef Minar, of the Slovak Emergency Health Service Operational Centre, said that paramedics were despatched to Havlickova Street in Bratislava at 1.34 a.m. (local time) at the request of police.

"The police informed us that it apprehended the perpetrator with a gunshot wound in his lower extremity. We treated the 49-year-old man and transported him to hospital," added Minar.

Knazko was one of the most popular faces of the 1989 Velvet Revolution in Slovakia. He was Foreign Affairs Minister of Slovakia from 1992 to 1993 and Culture Minister from 1998 to 2002.

He also ran unsuccessfully in 2014 for the Slovak President and Bratislava mayor.
