Berlin, Jan 2 : Emergency teams on Monday worked to extinguish a forest fire on Jochberg mountain in Bavaria, Germany.

Local firefighters were reportedly battling the blaze with up to seven helicopters, after a 100 hectare area caught fire on Sunday, Efe news reported.

The fire was believed to have been started by two distressed hikers, possibly as they tried to signal for help when one of them got injured, according to police.

One of the men had reportedly fallen nearly 100 metres and broken a leg.

It was thought that the incident may have led the pair to start a fire as a means of drawing attention to their situation.

But police were not sure whether the fire was started before or after one of the hikers fell.
