New Delhi, July 23 : Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday will inaugurate country's first green train corridor, between Rameshwaram and Manamadurai as all the trains running on this stretch would be provided with discharge free bio-toilets.

Accordingly, ten passenger trains consisting of 286 coaches moving on the 114-km-long section have been provided with bio-toilets.

Railways ministry has decided to provide discharge free bio-toilet in all its coaches which would be completed by September 2019.

The ministry has already provided 40,750 bio-toilets in its coaches till June 30 and would install additional 30,000 bio-toilets by the end of financial year.

Indian Railways have developed environment-friendly bio-toilets for its coaches in association with Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO).

The statement said that the environment friendly, low cost and robust technology is the first-of-its-kind in the railway systems in the world.

In the bio-toilet fitted coaches, human waste is collected in tanks below the toilets and decomposed by a consortium of bacteria.
