Kottayam, June 25 : The Nair Service Society (NSS) on Saturday passed a resolution at its annual conference, coming down on the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front government for disbanding the Devaswom Recruitment Board and entrusting the appointments to the Board with the Public Service Commission.

The resolution noted that the State government would draw severe flak for entrusting appointments to Hindu religious institutions with a non-religious body like the Public Service Commission.

The resolution also exhorted the government to initiate measures to protect the traditions and customs being practiced at the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala.

Notably, the NSS resolution took strong exception to calls for granting women of all ages entry to the hill shrine at Sabarimala.

Prohibiting women of menstrual age from entering the hill shrine was part and parcel of the age-old traditions and customs being practiced at Sabarimala since the presiding deity at the temple, Lord Ayyappa, was a perpetual bachelor, the resolution said.

The resolution also pointed out that it was incumbent on the State government and the Travancore Devaswom Board, which manages the affairs of the temple, to convince the Supreme Court to uphold the traditions and customs of the Sabarimala temple while giving a verdict on the petition filed by the Indian Young Lawyers’ Association.

The Association had petitioned the Supreme Court seeking a directive to lift the ban on women aged between 10 and 50 from entering the temple on the ground that the ban was a violation of their fundamental rights under Article 25 and 26 enshrined in the Constitution.

Minister for Devaswom Kadakampally Surendran had earlier taken the stand that ban on women of menstrual age to enter the Sabarimala temple was unjust.

However, he backtracked after his views kicked up a storm and later said that the LDF government would not take any decision that would hurt the sentiments of any community.
