Jammu, June 8 : Timely action by the Indian Army on Wednesday helped avert a major forest fire in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesman said.

The fire was first noticed around Kalal village in Naushera area around 8.45 a.m. on Tuesday.

The fire spread among wild bushes and trees near the agricultural fields along the village's eastern periphery, making the villagers panicky.

After they reported the matter to the army officials at Kalal, an army team rushed to the village along with a bowser and other firefighting equipment and doused the fire.

"Timely action prevented damage to men, material and cultivated land of villagers," the defence spokesman told IANS here.
