Kolkata, May 30 : Surajit Kar Purkayastha was on Monday appointed new Director General of West Bengal Police, an official release said.

He will replace G.M.P Reddy, who retires on Tuesday.

Purkayastha, a 1985 batch Indian Police Service officer, is now Director General, CID and has earlier served as Kolkata's Commissioner of Police.

Director General of Police, Intelligence Branch, Raj Kanojia, three years senior to Purkayastha in the service, has been shifted to the post of Commandant General and DG Home Guards, replacing D.P. Tarenia. He would also continue as Director General, Coastal Security, but as an additional charge.

Tarenia has been moved to the slot of DG, State Crime Records Bureau.

DG, Armed Police, C. V. Muralidhar would take over as advisor, security and Vigilence, West Bengal State Electricity Development Corporation Limited.

Both Tarenia and Muralidhar are also senior to Purkayastha.
