Kolkata, Aug 29 : A senior Congress leader on Saturday threatened to hold a sit-in outside a college in West Bengal's West Midnapore district, demanding arrest of the culprits responsible for the death of a student earlier this month and an indefinite fast here if justice was denied.

"I strongly denounce the chief minister's remarks. From 1 p.m. on Monday I will start a sit-in before Sabong Sajanikanta Mahavidyalaya. If I don't get justice, then I will start an indefinite hunger-strike at the base of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Kolkata," said former state Congress president Manas Bhunia, denouncing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's remarks after the incident.

Soon after the August 7 incident, the Congress and its students wing Chhatra Parishad had blamed Trinamool for fatally attacking the victim Krishna Prasad Jana, but hours later, Banerjee claimed the incident happened as a result of factional feuds within the the Congress student outfit.

"The incident happened inside the union room. The union is run by the Chhatra Parishad and not by the TMCP. The victim was hit with a bat during the scuffle," she had said soon after the Congress accused the Trinamool.

Three people were arrested for beating Jana to death inside the college. However, the district police chief later said none of the three were seen with any weapon in the CCTV footage.

Since then, police have taken into custody a couple of Chhatra Parishad activists, including union general secretary Soumen Ganguly.
