Montevideo, July 3 : Uruguay football legend Diego Forlan on Friday advised his former club Manchester United not to sell Argentine winger Angel Di Maria under any circumstances.

"United will regret it if he leaves. He should be given another season to prove himself and United should try to understand him better and trust him," former star striker Forlan was quoted as saying by goal.com.

Forlan, who was named best player of the 2010 FIFA World Cup where his team finished fourth, also said sometimes the coach and players do not get along but Di Maria is worth persisting with for Louis van Gaal's side.

"Great coaches and great players don't always get on and not every player fits into rigid systems, but Di Maria is worth persisting with," the former Uruguay captain said of the former Real Madrid star.

The 36-year-old, who also starred for Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, said Di Maria is different than others and he has a lot more to offer to United as a player.

"Di Maria started out in England like the player we knew he was at Real Madrid in the 2013-14 season. He looked a class above opponents, he ran at defenders, he was a danger around the box and he covered so much ground. Less talented players have felt they were too good to work as hard as him," Forlan, who scored 36 goals in 112 matches for Uruguay before announcing his retirement on March 12, said.

"Players are not robots and if there's something wrong then their coaches need to find out what the problem is. Di Maria is worth the effort. He offers something different from almost every other player," concluded Forlan, who scored 17 goals from his three seasons at United.
