Ljubljana, May 5 : Slovenian Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek Monday submitted a letter of resignation to Parliament Speaker Janko Veber, two days after she announced her decision to quit.
Following her resignation, all cabinet members would also end their terms, she said Saturday, noting that coalition party leaders suggested an early election be held before the summer, Xinhua reported.
Bratusek, the first female prime minister in Slovenia's history, announced her resignation after meeting heads of coalition parties Saturday.
Bratusek was sworn in as cabinet leader after parliament dismissed the coalition government headed by former prime minister Janez Jansa in February 2013.
The National Assembly would Thursday take note of Bratusek's resignation letter, thus starting the procedure leading to an early election, Veber told reporters.
Slovenian President Borut Pahor is due to consult jurists on early election Wednesday, according to the parliament speaker.
Under Slovenian law, the head of state, any parliamentary party, or a group of at least 10 lawmakers, will have a 30-day deadline to propose a new candidate once Bratusek's resignation is formally acknowledged.
If no candidate is proposed, or no candidate wins a majority support in parliament, the president can dissolve parliament and call for an early election to be held within 40 days at the earliest and two months at the latest.
