Sensex trades flat; banks up; capital goods down

 Indian equities are trading flat on Monday. Bankex and FMCG stocks witnessed a rise whereas capital goods stocks registered a fall. At 10.28 a.m., the Sensex was trading down 0.61 points at 21,119.51 with 16 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 1.65 points or 0.03% at 6,275.30 with 26 components falling. 

The 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex opened with a decline of 40.85 points or 0.19% at 21,079.27, while the broad based NSE Nifty started with a fall of 12.60 points or 0.20%, at 6,264.35.

Sensex Movers

Larsen & Toubro  contributed fall of 15.98 points in the Sensex.  It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation  (11.82 points), Tata Motors  (8.02 points), Jaiprakash Associates  (4.22 points) and Mahindra & Mahindra  (2.92 points).

However, I T C  contributed rise of 13.16 points in the Sensex.  It was followed by State Bank Of India (10.37 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation  (10.04 points), H D F C Bank  (7.49 points) and I C I C I Bank  (6.3 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were State Bank Of India (1.30%), Hindalco Industries  (1.14%), Tata Steel  (1.08%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries  (0.64%), Housing Development Finance Corporation  (0.61%),  and I T C  (0.58%).

 On the other hand, Dr Reddy'S Laboratories  (1.64%), Larsen & Toubro  (1.51%), Bajaj Auto  (1.28%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation  (1.27%), Tata Motors  (1.15%),  and Coal India  (0.82%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.61% and 0.50% respectively.  The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Amtek Auto (1.65%), CORE Education and Technologies  (1.27%), Allahabad Bank (1.2%), A I A Engineering  (0.26%) and Alstom India  (0.06%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (9.68%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services  (3.14%), Trident  (1.98%), Action Construction Equipment  (1.69%) and Styrolution ABS (India)  (1.05%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Bankex index was at 12,342.16, up by 57.89 points or by 0.47%.  The major gainers were Bank Of Baroda(2.09%), Federal Bank  (2.02%), Bank Of India (1.25%), Canara Bank (0.74%) and H D F C Bank  (0.45%).

The FMCG index was at 6,509.15, up by 25.19 points or by 0.39%.  The major gainers were United Breweries (1.31%), Tata Global Beverages  (0.72%), I T C  (0.58%), Colgate-Palmolive (India)  (0.47%) and United Spirits  (0.39%).

On the other hand, the Capital Goods index was at 10,277.39, down by 98.21 points or by 0.95%.  The major losers were Larsen & Toubro (1.51%), F A G Bearings India  (0.31%), A B B India  (0.24%), Siemens  (0.09%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals  (0.06%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,060 advances against 750 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Bharat Heavy Electricals  topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 19,123.73 million.  It was followed by Asian Paints  (Rs. 884.16 million), Tata Elxsi  (Rs. 380.23 million) and State Bank Of India (Rs. 373.89 million).

The volume chart was led by Bharat Heavy Electricals  with trades of over 114.44 million shares.  It was followed by Jaiprakash Power Ventures  (2.71 million), Asian Paints  (1.86 million) and Spicejet  (1.05 million).
