CBI may close AgustaWestland probe after hitting dead end

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to close the probe into the AgustaWestland scam after hitting a dead end, said a report.

The AgustaWestland case in Italy was closed in 2014 but the CBI has struggled to move in the absence of evidence.

There has been no road ahead for the CBI in the case despite the agency booking a host of individuals including former Indian Air Force (IAF) chief SP Tyagi and his cousins among others who allegedly took money to swing the deal in favour of the helicopter-maker.

The Rs 3,600 crore contract for 12 AW-101 helicopters was scrapped two years ago.

This comes even as AgustaWestland is now implicated a Swedish corruption probe. Sweden's anti-corruption authorities said on Friday that they had launched an inquiry into the Swedish Maritime Administration's 2012 purchase of seven rescue helicopters from Italian maker AgustaWestland.
