Moneycontrol BureauVijay Mallya has been asked by United Breweries to step down as the non-executive chairman of the liquor company, with immediate effect, reports Mint. This decision was taken at the company's Wednesday board meet.An email was sent on Wednesday in the evening by the company's Secretary and Senior Vice-president Govind Iyengar to Mallya in this regard. It was also filed with BSE.The mail read, "I am directed by the board to convey that in order to comply with the Sebi order and in the absence of any stay or vacation of the said order, the board is compelled to request you to step down from the board of United Breweries Ltd with immediate effect."Sebi had earlier forbid Mallya along with six other senior officials from United Spirits holding the position of director or any managerial position in any listed company. It had also barred them from any kind of buying or selling in securities.The company - according to the email - had sought legal opinion before coming to the conclusion.The board had also on February 6, decided to not send any information related to the board meetings or other privileged information to Mallya till he obtains a stay on the order given by Sebi.
