Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) today said it has won a Rs 1,119-crore contract for dredging of a shipping channel at Kolkata Port in a global bidding in which seven players participated.

"Kolkata Port has called for global competitive tenders for maintenance dredging in the shipping channel leading to Haldia Dock Complex in the Hooghly estuary for a period of five years from January 2017. DCI is the successful lowest bidder," DCI said in a BSE filing.

It said seven Indian and foreign players participated in the pre-bid meeting for the tender and only two parties participated in the tender including DCI.

"DCI is the only party which has been technically qualified for the tender and price bid of the DCI was opened by port...With this DCI which is the only PSU in the dredging field in India is securing all major contracts on open competitive bidding process," it said.

DCI has been carrying out the maintenance dredging works for Kolkata Port channels for the past 30 years, awarded on nomination basis by the government.

In the past, DCI used to dredge about 24 mn cubic meter per year by deploying six dredgers at Jellingham and Auckland bars.

Under the new contract, the quantum of dredging has been reduced to about 8 mn cubic meter per year consequent to opening up of the Eden channel and DCI will execute the contract by deploying three dredgers, the statement said.
