Doordarshan looks to woo Indian youth with a new logo, invites design entries

The move is a part of an overall revamp of programmes and channels by Prasar Bharti to revive viewership and finances of the network

In order to connect with the huge youth population of the country, the state-owned broadcaster Prasar Bharati is planning to revamp logo for Doordarshan.

The broadcaster, which runs 23 channels across the country, invited entries from public, seeking a design for logo. “The new logo, while recalling the strong nostalgia associated with the DD brand, should reflect the aspirations of new India,” it said, reported Livemint.

The current logo, which symbolises a human eye, has been associated with Doordarshan since 1959.

“We have to connect with the youth of India and make brand Doordarshan relevant to them. The logo has to reflect that,” the report quoted Shashi Shekhar Vempati, Chief Executive Officer at public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.

The public broadcaster has been introducing new programmes and revamping its channels in an effort to revive viewership and finances of the network. It has recently re-introduced some old TV shows from the 1980s. The plan to change logo pertains to the same efforts.

In addition, Doordarshan also intends to launch new channels catering to children and the youth, claimed the report.

During the last fiscal year, the broadcaster performed better than expected and garnered a revenue of Rs 827.5 crore, more than the target of Rs 800 crore. This is nearly 10 percent more than FY16 revenue when it earned Rs 755 crore.

The last date to send the logo design entries to Doordarshan is August 13, and the best entry will be awarded Rupees one lakh in cash.
