Gandhinagar: Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has said that her government will launch a drive where each citizen of Gujarat is required to dedicate a day every month to clean their neighbourhood.

"During Wednesday's Cabinet meeting, we have decided to declare one day of each month for cleaning. On that day, all citizens should come out of their homes and clean their nearby areas," Patel announced during her speech at a function to hand over cheques worth Rs 1,652 crore to different civic bodies for developmental works.

Stressing the need to develop a habit of cleanliness, Patel asked all stakeholders to join the campaign, which begins from Thursday and she also urged the people to gift a 'Clean Gujarat' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"We have to cultivate this habit of keeping our city clean. When he was CM, Modi successfully inculcated this habit in the people. As a result, you won't find people loitering on Kankarai lakefront or Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad," Patel said.

"Just like Mahatma Gandhi, Modi too has started this campaign for cleanliness, and we must join this drive. I urge all municipalities to prepare an action plan for the same, so that, we can gift Modi a 'Clean Gujarat' by 2019," Patel said.

While giving away cheques to municipal corporations, municipalities and urban development bodies of more than 25 cities and towns, Patel asked elected leaders and officials of these civic bodies to fulfil demands of people in their area.

"Since you are have ample funds, you must ensure that funds are utilized to provide amenities to people such as schools and drinking water. You must ensure that work is completed in time and within budget. That is what people expect from us," Patel said.
