The victims' family claimed tension between Sonu Chauhan and his wife Poonam's ( 28) family over his “ frequent and unreasonable” dowry demands could be the reason behind the bloody episode.
The fateful incident took place at Bakhtawarpur village when the accused Sonu drove down to the residence of his father-in-law Bhopal Singh (55) here with the intention to take back his wife Poonam and their two-year-old son, who were camping here for the wedding of her brother Tarun (24).
Sonu had a strained relationship with Poonam and her family and that she had come to attend her brother's wedding did not go down too well with him.
Sonu told Poonam that he wanted to discuss something with her and asked her to sit in his car.
As the couple had not been sharing cordial relations, Tarun accompanied his sister. Sonu drove a kilometre away from the house and shot the siblings in the car itself.
Sonu then drove back to the house with the bodies and there opened fire on his father-in-law Bhopal from a very close range, the official said. He even looked out for his mother-in-law but could not find her.
When the victims' relatives present on the spot tried to nab Sonu, he allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself.
While Bhopal and Sonu were immediately rushed to Raja Harishchandra Hospital where they were declared brought dead, the siblings were taken to Max Hospital but they could not be saved.
A case of murder has been registered at Alipur Police Station and further investigations are going on to determine the purpose behind the killings.
Sonu was a resident of Barola village in Gautam Budh Nagar district and was married to Poonam four years ago. He had some issues with his in-laws soon after their marriage and did not like his Poonam visiting her parental house.
According to the police, Sonu was carrying sophisticated and country-made pistols and seven cartridges were recovered from his car.
