In memory of Padma Kumuta, Chomana Dudi screening

The KVS film study circle is organizing a special show of 1975 Chomana Dudi` in memory of recently passed away actress Padma Kumuta on 12th of March Sunday at 5.30 pm at KV Subbanna Aptha Rangamandira,151 7th cross 4rth lane, Teachers colony 1 stage near Dayananda Sagar college, opp Vasudha Bhavan, Bangalore 78.

A quick recap on Chomana Dudi` directed by BV Karanth the legendary director and theater personality that bagged the national award – Swarna Kamal in 1975.

It is for this film Padma Kumuta bagged the best supporting actress from Karnataka state film awards of 1975-1976.

Chomana Dudi` made in black and white had the Story, screenplay and dialogue from Gnanapith award winner Dr Shivarama Karanth by Praja Films.

It is a tragic story of Choma, untouchable. His only ambition in life is to own a piece of land. But he fails to realize his dream. His two sons Chaniya and Guruva, works as bonded labourers in a coffee estate under adverse conditions to pay off their father debts. Guruva elopes with Christian girl and Chaniya returns home.

Choma daughter Belli with younger brother goes to work in the estate. Belli (Padma Kumuta) is seduced by Manvela the estate owners writer and later raped by the estate owner. She escapes from the estate and returns home. Choma is happy on her return, for, the debt is cleared.

Choma hopes to get her married, he begs Sankappaiah his landlord to give a piece of land only to be refused. Choma is frustrated and the disintegeration of the family sets in. Events overtake Choma, he drives out of his daughter from the house when he sees her making love to Manvela. He leaves this world as though he was waiting for this all his life.
