Great Britain’s Laura Muir won her first championship gold medal when she broke a 32-year-old European Indoor Championships record in the 1,500-meter race on Saturday.

But when it was time for Muir to take her victory lap, a game of chicken ensued between the 23-year-old runner from Scotland and a stringent official.

“They said: ‘We don’t have time.’ I thought, it’s my first medal. I’m not going to lose out on my lap of honor,” Muir explained after the race in Belgrade, according to The Guardian. “I’m going. Andy, my coach, was saying: ‘Do it,’ so I got there in the end.”

Indeed, Muir eventually broke away (who was that official kidding?) and enjoyed her moment in the spotlight.

Muir ran the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 2.39 seconds. On Sunday, she claimed her second gold medal when she won the women’s 3,000-meter race.
