HTC is working on a mobile VR headset that will be launched by the end of this year, according to HTC CFO Chia-lin Chang who told Cnet. The mobile VR headset will be compatible with company’s new top-end smartphone, the U Ultra.

Chang says the mobile VR headset will be different from the current VR headsets that majorly rely on smartphones. “We have a good plan in terms of combining mobility with VR”, Chang told Cnet. The mobile VR headset which the company is working on  is “not a phone slapped onto a headset.” There is a possibility that the new VR headset is a standalone device which will not require a phone.

HTC had forayed into VR with its Vive headset. The company was expected to introduce second generation Vive VR headset at CES 2017 last month. HTC reported a net loss of NT$ 3.1 billion ($100 million) or loss of NT$3.77 per share, on revenue of NT$ 22.2 billion ($720.7 million) for its fiscal 2016 fourth quarter that ended December 31, 2016
