The judge said he considered 17-year-old Ali Shukri Amin’s age and lack of a criminal record during sentencing Friday in federal court in Alexandria. Amin of Manassas told the judge he didn’t “expect sympathy.”

Amin pleaded guilty in June to conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. He would have otherwise been graduating from high school with honours around the time of his plea.

He admitted helping another Virginia teenager travel to Syria, as well as using Twitter and other social media to solicit donations and support for the Islamic State.
