Wimbledon 2017: Svetlana Kuznetsova moves into quarters, Jelena Ostapenko knocks out Elina Svitolina

London: Seventh-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova reached her first Wimbledon quarter-final in 10 years on Monday with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Polish ninth seed Agnieszka Radwanska.

Kuznetsova, a former US and French Open champion, crushed 37 winners in her victory, which gave her a last-eight clash against Garbine Muguruza.

The seventh-seeded Russian will be playing in the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the fourth time, but the first since 2007. She has yet to advance past that stage.

Radwanska made at least the quarter-finals five times in her 11 previous appearances — including losing to Serena Williams in the final in 2012.

Having faced opponents with an average ranking of 139 in her opening three matches, Kuznetsova was required to up her game against tricky Radwanska and she did so, striking 37 winners to her opponent’s 13.

There was no way back for Radwanska in the first set as she lost the opening four games on a sun-drenched Court Three.

But the second set lasted nearly an hour and contained a succession of long baseline exchanges. Kuznetsova, one of six Grand Slam champions to reach the last-16 and the second-oldest woman left standing, broke crucially in the seventh game.

She wobbled as she served for victory at 5-4 but battled back from 15-40 down and nailed a backhand winner on match point to move through to the last eight.

Kuznetsova has never gone past the quarters, falling to Justine Henin in 2003, Lindsay Davenport in 2005 and Venus Williams in 2007.

Meanwhile, Magdalena Rybarikova, who missed nearly seven months after last year’s Wimbledon because of injuries, also moved into the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time.

She beat Petra Martic of Croatia 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Rybarikova, from Slovakia and ranked No 87, had not advanced past the third round in any of her previous 35 appearances in the main draw at a Grand Slam.

Rybarikova had beaten third-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

French Open Jelena Ostapenko needed eight match points to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

The Latvian defeated fourth-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Court 12.

Ostapenko advanced to the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time. However, the 20-year-old Latvian won the girls’ title at Wimbledon in 2014.

Before winning the title at Roland Garros last month, Ostapenko had never before been past the third round at a major tournament. She was the first woman to win her debut tour-level title at a Grand Slam tournament since 1979.
