The answer to why Dhoni lied lies in the Mahabharata

I was really not surprised to learn that MS Dhoni lied to the Justice Mudgal Committee about Gurunath Meiyappan. This is exactly why even the great Dharmaraju/Yudhishtir had to go to hell.

The answer to why Dhoni lied lies in the Mahabharata

I am not a fan of the abrasive ways of Arnab Goswami, but I was glad he raised a question that I have raised many times over the years. Why exactly are the gods of cricket silent about the running of BCCI, IPL and match-fixing. Why are those who opened their mouths incarcerated? What’s the meaning of this silence?

I’ve heard enough stories of how even the best of bookies, dons and fixers couldn’t sway Sachin Tendulkar. Maybe it’s true. Maybe he’s like the mythical Dharmaraju (Yudhistir for North Indians). However, to borrow from Spiderman, “with great power comes great responsibility.”

And the responsibility is not to oneself but to the institution that you preside over and more importantly to those who give you that power - the populace.

Coming to Dharmaraju/Yudhishtir, my younger brother once told me something unheard of before. He pointed out that Dharmaraju/Yudhishtir always tried to be “seen as good.” That itself is a selfish ambition, and a sin.

To attain that status that he so badly desired, he played mute many a times, while continuing to display his skills as astute politician, fearless warrior, and role model. He genuinely did not want enmity and animosity to escalate with his cousins. But his personal ambition was at odds with his power and status - stopping him from doing the “right thing.”

Ultimately, the situation went so out of hand, that the great Dharmaraju/Yudhishtir had to half-lie to his own Guru: “Ashwathaama hatah….kunjaraha” (Ashwathaama is dead…..the elephant) where he deceived Drona by loudly declaring that Ashwathaama is dead, suggesting that the guru has lost his son in the battle.

But since he is the great Dharmaraju and is not supposed to lie, he makes up for it by whispering the rest of the sentence “kunjaraha” which means “elephant”

So I was really not surprised to learn that MS Dhoni lied to the Justice Mudgal Committee about Gurunath Meiyappan. This is exactly why even the great Dharmaraju/Yudhishtir had to go to hell.
