Power lifter Farman Basha finished fourth in the men’s 49 kg category at 2016 Rio Paralympics , missing out on a bronze medal as a result.
Farman, who also represented India in the 2012 Paralympic Games, was successful in lifting 140 kg in his first attempt. But consecutive failures to lift in the second and the third attempt of 150 kg and 155 kg respectively saw him finish fourth in the event.
Vietnamese Le van Cong who created a world record by lifting 181 kg in his third attempt won the gold medal. And Qarada Omar of Jordan grabbed silver while Hungary’s Tunkel Nandor secured bronze.
However, Farman came closest to a medal on the opening day of the games as fellow Indian athletes failed to shine in their respective events. Discus thrower Amit Kumar Saroha finished seventh in the men’s discus throw F52 final in Rio de Janeiro. While, Naresh Kumar Sharma didn’t even qualify for the 10m air rifle standing final. He finished 21st in the SH1 qualification round.
The 44-year old shot 98.1 in his first attempt. but just shot 95.6 in his second. He tried to revive his chances of clinching a berth in the final and made strong comeback firing 99.2 and 103.3 in the third and fourth series respectively. But, the improved performance came a tad late and he bowed out of the Paralympics.
