Mudgal Report: Srini knew of a player violating the code, but did nothing

In what came as a huge relief to ICC chairman, and suspended BCCI president, N Srinivasan, the Justice Mukul Mudgal Committee’s report on IPL spot-fixing said that neither he nor his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan were involved in match-fixing. However, the report said that Srinivasan was aware of a player violating the IPL code of conduct but did nothing, while Meiyappan was guilty of having contacts with bookies and betting.

The name of the player - listed only as individual 3 in the summary - and the details of the violation - have not yet been made public.

The summary report was disclosed by the Supreme Court on Monday. The report also indicted Rajasthan Royals’ co-owner Raj Kundra for involvement in betting.

The committee’s findings said Srinivasan, classified as individual 13 in the report, failed to take action despite being aware of violations of the IPL code of conduct.

“This individual [Srinivasan> along with four other BCCI officials was aware of the violation of the Players Code of Conduct by Individual 3, but no action was taken against Individual 3 by any of the aforesaid officials who were aware of the infraction,” the report said.

Srinivasan told NDTV he had not read the report and would react only after he the Supreme Court passed its judgement.

Meiyappan, the report said, was a team official, if not the de facto owner, of Chennai Super Kings, contrary to Srinivasan’s assertion that he was just a “cricket enthusiast”. However, “no material is available on record to show that this individual is involved is involved in match fixing.

The other startling disclosure in the report is that Sundar Raman, the IPL chief operating officer, “knew a contact of a bookie and had contacted him eight times in one season.”

Listed as Individual 12 in the report, Raman said he knew the person “but however claimed to be unaware of his connection with betting activities.” The other detail about revealed about Raman was that he was given information that Meiyappan and Kundra were betting but chose to keep that information to himself. In his defence, Raman said the ICC-ACSU chief told him this was not actionable information.

As far as Kundra (Individual 11) is concerned, the 25-page report said he “was in touch with the bookies about betting and thus by not reporting contact with the bookie, has violated BCCI/IPL Anti-Corruption Code.

“The committee also found that the investigation against this individual was abruptly and without reason stopped by the Rajasthan Police upon receiving case papers from Delhi Police.”

Meanwhile interim BCCI president Shivlal Yadav told Times Now: “In the case of Meiyappan and Raj Kundra, action will be taken against them. If there is evidence against Mr Sundar Raman, [about speaking> to a bookie then action will be taken. The BCCI will not spare anybody.”
