Loud cheers, govt jobs, badminton game: Here's how India welcomed Rio 2016 stars Sindhu, Sakshi and Dipa

PV Sindhu scripted history at the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016 by becoming the first ever Indian shuttler to win a silver medal.

PV Sindhu scripted history at the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016 by becoming the first ever Indian shuttler to win a silver medal.

Sakshi Malik, on the other hand, became India’s first-ever female wrestler to win an Olympic medal.

However, Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar missed out on an Olympic medal in the women’s vault competition as she finished fourth in the final of the Olympics game.

India is known for showering love in abundance to its victorious players once they return home. So, let’s take a look at how these three players were welcomed.

Loud cheers greeted Sakshi Malik

Malik arrived in Delhi on Wednesday to a rousing welcome. She was greeted with loud cheers at the Indira Gandhi International airport.

She waved to the crowd, saying, “I want to thank each and everyone for such a warm welcome. So happy to see so many people cheering for me. I also want to thanks all those who prayed for me, which helped me win the medal for my country.”

The Haryana government, too, showered a warm welcome to Malik. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar received her in Jhajjar district.

At the grand felicitation ceremony, she was given a cheque of Rs 2.5 crore by Khattar and appointed as Haryana’s brand ambassador for the Beti Padhao-Beti Bachao programme.

Sakshi, who works with the Railways, would also be promoted. The Haryana government offered her a Class II job in the government.

Apart from this, Khattar announced to set up a Sports Nursery and Stadium in her village. According to Hindustan Times , the whole district celebrated her victory and homecoming throughout the night.

The Delhi government has also announced a cash prize of Rs 1 crore for Malik.

Grand reception awaited Dipa Karmakar and her coach Bisweshwar Nandi

Hundreds of people welcomed Karmakar on the streets of Tripura’s capital Agartala. Karmakar and her coach Bisweshwar Nandi were received by fans as soon as they left the Agartala airport, Hindustan Times reported.

A grand reception ceremony was arranged for her at the Swami Vivekananda Stadium. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar announced that she will be promoted as an assistant director and her coach as the deputy director in the sports department.

Education Minister Chakraborty declared a holiday in all educational institutions on Tuesday.

Fourth to miss the medal by a whisker, said her eyes are on the Tokyo Olympics now.

“I am very happy that I have received a grand reception despite failing to bring a medal for India. My text target is Tokyo Olympics and I will bring a medal this time. I don’t want to lose my podium,” Karmakar said.

PV Sindhu, undoubtedly, received the best reception among the three upon reaching Vijayawada on Tuesday.  It became a all the more interesting when Andha Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu began playing badminton with her on stage in front of the audience.

A large number of fans thronged outside Gannavaram Airport to get a glimpse of Sindhu.

The Telangana government announced a Rs 5-crore cash reward and a 1,000 square yard housing site near the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Gachibowli. She has also been offered a suitable government job, The Indian Express reported.

The Andhra Pradesh government announced Rs 3-crore cash reward. It has also offered a Group 1 officer’s job by the Andhra government.

The Delhi government has also announced a reward of Rs 2 crore for Sindhu. She has been promised a BMW by former Andhra cricket captain, V Chamundeshwarnath.
