IPL 2017 Highlights, MI vs KXIP in Mumbai, cricket score and updates: Punjab win by 7 runs

That’s it from us from Firstpost Sports! It turned out to be one cracker of a match in the end, and Kings XI Punjab still are very much alive in the tournament! We look forward to a few intense clashes in the remainder of the league stage.

For now, we bid you good night!

Wriddiman Saha is the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 93 off 55 balls.

100 out of 100 to Pollard and Co for trying.  The target just proved a bit too much in the end.  The Punjab bowlers put their yorkers at the right place at the right moment and defended their score well.  But the fact that Mumbai got within a whisker of the mammoth target speaks volumes of their abilities. Punjab are peaking at the right time too.

That last over from Mohit was clutch! Wow what a finish! What a game! Punjab’s seamers were poor all game, and it looked like Pollard was going to steal it but Mohit backed his yorkers in the last over and he managed to pull it off. He turned a terrible night into a good one with three good balls. Shows how quickly T20 can change. The game was set up by Saha with good support from Guptill and Maxwell. Not a night for bowlers, but Kings XI’s do just enough to keep them alive in this IPL.

People are leaving disappointed but a couple of kids try to derive positives saying, “Papa pan maaja aali, mast match zaali.” (Dad but we got to watch a good match, enjoyed it)

Mohit holds his nerves to defend 16 in the last over and that too against Pollard. A couple of brilliant yorkers under pressure did the trick. KXIP are alive and has kept the group stage alive too.

11:56 PM (IST)

After 20 overs,Mumbai Indians 223/6 ( Kieron Pollard 50 , Harbhajan Singh 2)

Mohit bowls the final over. Pollard hammers the first ball down the ground, and comes back for a second run. He however, fails to reach the crease at the non-striker’s end, and gets only a single. SIX! Smoked over the midwicket fence by the burly Trinidadian! Dot off the third, with Pollard refusing a single after guiding it down towards long-off. Another dot in the fourth ball, with Mohit firing a perfect yorker this time. Mohit finishes off in style with a perfect couple of deliveries, yielding just one run off it. Pollard gets to his half-century with a single off the last ball, but the fact that it ends up in a losing cause hardly evokes any celebrations from him.

Kings XI Punjab win by 7 runs!

11:50 PM (IST)

After 19 overs,Mumbai Indians 215/6 ( Kieron Pollard 42 , Harbhajan Singh 2)

Sandeep to bowl the crucial penultimate over. Swing and miss for Harbhajan in the first delivery. Gets a single in the next ball to hand the strike back to KP. Pollard collects a double in the third delivery. Pollard drives the fourth ball towards extra-cover, and once again gets a double. Wide conceded in the fifth delivery. Single off the fifth delivery. Dot off the final ball of the over, with seven coming off it.

Mumbai Indians need 16 to win from 6 balls.

11:50 PM (IST)

Harbhajan misses one but takes a single next ball, the fans shout mid run -“Pollard doosra dhavu Nokos” (please don’t run the second). Pollard then scampers through for a risky second the next ball and gets a standing ovation. And then runs another two and gets another ovation with shouts of “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” They are all involved and engrossed in the match here.

11:43 PM (IST)

Another dropped catch.  This time by Punjab captain Maxwell.  And the ball goes over the ropes.  Two fours after that.  The wankhede is going bonkers. Karn Sharma is bowled on the fifth ball.  Good little innings though. Walks off to a massive applause.  Harbhajan comes in. ‘Bhajji Bhajji’, goes the wankhede.  23 from 12. This is eminently possible.

11:43 PM (IST)

Karn walks off hitting his pads in disappointment as he misses a wide swing and finds his stumps shattered.  The crowd gives him a warm applause for his crucial cameo. 23 needed Off 12, everything hinges on Pollard now.

11:43 PM (IST)

After 18 overs,Mumbai Indians 208/6 ( Kieron Pollard 37 , Harbhajan Singh 1)

Mohit in for his third over. Pollard collects a single off the first ball. SIX! Karn hammers the second ball down the ground, and Maxwell palms it over the boundary rope! Nothing’s going right for the KXIP skipper right now! FOUR! Karn brings up the team 200 with a cut towards the point boundary! FOUR MORE! Full-toss outside off, and this one runs away past the short third man for the second consecutive four! BOWLED EM! Mohit deceives Karn with a slower ball, with Karn swinging his bat rather early, and getting his stumps rattled as a result. Harbhajan walks out to bat, and retains strike for the penultimate over with a single.

Mumbai Indians need 23 to win from 12 balls.

11:41 PM (IST)

BOWLED EM! Another twist in what is turning out to be a cracker of a game! Karn tries slogging this one towards the leg side, but it was a slower one from Mohit! MI 207/6

11:37 PM (IST)

‘Pollaaard Pollaaard’ chants in the stadium. He is Mumbai’s last hope now.  And he is putting up a brave fight as he smacks one for a six over long on.  ‘Man of steel’,  says the big screen. ‘Suupermaan’ shouts an over enthusiastic fan, who throws his arms in joy,  almost decapitating the person sitting beside him,  much to the latter’s chagrin.

11:37 PM (IST)

Hardik gone. But Pollard has continued his assault. There are relentless chants of Pollard…. Pollard. All hopes on the big man now. There is excitement as well as anxiety inside the stands.

11:36 PM (IST)

After 17 overs,Mumbai Indians 192/5 ( Kieron Pollard 36 , Karn Sharma 5)

Sandeep back into the attack, and he starts off with a wide. Sandeep however, strikes in the very next delivery to pull Punjab back into the game as Pandya gets a bottom edge to get caught behind. Karn arrives at the crease, and gets off the mark with a single in his first delivery. FOUR! Pollard hammers a full delivery along the leg stump for a straight boundary. His presence is as crucial as it gets! SIX! Another full delivery from Sandeep, and the Trinidadian smokes this one down the ground! FOUR! Karn hammers the full-toss in the last ball towards long-on, and it ends up kissing the boundary rope despite Maxwell trying to slap the ball back inside the ground.

Mumbai Indians need 39 to win from 18 balls.

11:36 PM (IST)

Wriddhiman Saha is a star! First the innings to set up this huge total, and then once again he shows why he is one of the best glovemen in the game. That catch could be the match winner after Henry’s big over. Once again he went too full and missed his lengths, also lacked any variations. For Mumbai all hopes rest on Pollard’s big shoulders.

11:32 PM (IST)

Oh dear!  Pandya is out. Just when he was looking to lead a dramatic charge at the target. A collective groan in the wankhede. Pandya throws his gloves high in the air in disgust.

11:30 PM (IST)

That’s what I meant when I said can’t count Mumbai out still.  Pollard and Hardik are going berserk,  and with them is the Wankhede.  ‘Jeetega bhai jeetega Mumbai jeetega,’ says the Wankhede. Improbable but not impossible.

11:30 PM (IST)

OUT! Just when Mumbai were staging a comeback, Sandeep pulls Punjab back with a full, wide delivery that Pandya edges to the keeper! MI 176/5

Hardik c Saha b Sandeep 30(13)

11:28 PM (IST)

After 16 overs,Mumbai Indians 175/4 ( Kieron Pollard 25 , Hardik Pandya 30)

Henry back into the attack. He starts his second over off with a wide. SIX! Pollard slogs the first ball down the ground towards long-on, before hooking the next one towards backward square-leg for back-to-back sixes! SIX! Pandya times his slog towards the extra-cover fence like a dream! SIX MORE! Fifty-stand up, with Pandya smashing a full-toss over long-on! Massive over this for Mumbai, with 27 coming off it!

Mumbai Indians need 56 to win from 24 balls.

11:25 PM (IST)

Most balls bowled in an IPL season without taking a wicket:

102 – Ishant Sharma, 2017*

98 – Karn Sharma, 2016

96 – TM Dilshan, 2009

11:23 PM (IST)

After 15 overs,Mumbai Indians 148/4 ( Kieron Pollard 12 , Hardik Pandya 17)

Pollard bunts this delivery to long on for a single. Bowls it short on the next ball and Pandya fails to pull it properly. Gets a brace for his mistimed shot. Bowls it very full and outside off, Hardik leaves it alone. The umpire doesn’t signal a wide. Something similar happened in the last over. Two singles follow and Pandya ends the over with a six over long on. These two are not going to give up the chase so easily.

Mumbai Indians need 83 to win from 30 balls

11:19 PM (IST)

So then, 94 needed from the last six overs. An Everest to climb,  but till Pollard and Pandya are there,  won’t count MI out.

11:18 PM (IST)

As predicted, the spinners will play a crucial role for KXIP and three out of the four wickets have been grabbed by the spinners. It’s a tough task for MI now but they can still dream because there is Pollard at the crease.

11:17 PM (IST)

Despite the dew it’s the spinners who are getting Kings XI back into this match. Just like the last game, spin is proving to be their strength – shame it took almost a whole tournament for them to realise! Maxwell has led the way and now Tewatia and Axar are joining the party and taking wickets. Punjab in the box seat now but it’s still game on while Hardik and Pollard are out there.

11:16 PM (IST)

After 14 overs,Mumbai Indians 137/4 ( Kieron Pollard 10 , Hardik Pandya 8)

Tewatia into his second over. SIX! Hammered straight down the ground by Hardik, and that will come as a relief for the Mumbai dug-out! Pollard goes in the same direction in the penultimate delivery of the over. The umpire signals for the second timeout of the innings. Much better over for Mumbai, with 14 coming off it. The umpire signals for a second timeout.

Mumbai Indians need 94 to win from 36 balls.

11:16 PM (IST)

Maxwell has bowled his side back into this match, two fantastic overs from the captain returning some semblance of order to the proceedings. He has stepped up when the team has needed leadership and taken the ball himself and got the big wicket of Simmons thanks to a brilliant pluck from Guptill. The dew doesn’t seem to be bothering Maxi and he’s bowling a couple of good variations.

11:14 PM (IST)

After 13 overs,Mumbai Indians 123/4 ( Kieron Pollard 3 , Hardik Pandya 1)

Axar back into the attack. Rana struggles to connect in the over, getting an inside edge in the third ball that carries away to the short fine fielder. Tries a slog towards midwicket next ball, and ends up holing out to Guptill near the boundary, with the New Zealander collecting his third catch of the evening. Just three off the over along with the wicket. 16 runs scored in the last four overs for the loss of three wickets.

Mumbai Indians need 108 to win from 42 balls.

11:13 PM (IST)

Another MI batsman departs.  MI crumbling a bit trying to keep up with the asking rate. And there comes Hqrdio Pandya.  Somehow have always felt he had a Caribbean flavour to him. Can Pollard and ue do it for Mumbai now?

11:11 PM (IST)

Huge blow for MI as Rohit departs.  Pollard comes in to a fantastic cheer. ’ Polaaard Polaaard, ’ goes the Wankhede. The big West Indian defends the first ball. ‘Ek over dheere khelega,  phir maarega’ says a voice in the crowd.  But do MI have the luxury of an over?

11:11 PM (IST)

OUT! Wickets are tumbling one after another for Mumbai now, and it is Rana who has to return to the dugout after a run-a-ball 12. Rana mishits while going for a slog towards the leg side, and Guptill takes his third catch of the innings as a result. MI 121/4

Rana c Guptill b Axar 12(12)

11:09 PM (IST)

After 12 overs,Mumbai Indians 120/3 ( Nitish Rana 12 , Kieron Pollard 1)

Tewatia introduced into the attack. Rohit goes for a half-hearted slog down the ground, with the ball landing just short of the fielder near the boundary rope. Tewatia bangs in short again in the fourth ball, and this time succeeds in getting the captain’s wicket, as the latter departs for 5. Just three runs and a wicket for Tewatia in a brilliant over. Pollard’s the new man at the crease, and he gets off the mark with a single in the second ball he faces.

Mumbai Indians need 111 to win from 48 balls.

11:07 PM (IST)

OUT! Now the skipper goes back to the dugout after top-edging the Tewatia delivery straight to Guptill at long-on! Rohit was struggling throughout, and finally perishes while trying to accelerate his innings. MI 119/3

Rohit c Guptill b Tewatia 5(7)

11:05 PM (IST)

Ishant Sharma takes a 3rd tumble of the evening on his followthrough, the crowd is not amused. Then, funnily, the big screen flashes “Udta Punjab” (A popular film title) which sends the stands into splits. The screen operators do possess a bit of sense of humour.

11:03 PM (IST)

Goodness!!  Ishant Sharma takes another tumble on the follow through. More amusement for the Wankhede crowd. Some boos heard too.

11:03 PM (IST)

After 11 overs,Mumbai Indians 117/2 ( Nitish Rana 11 , Rohit Sharma (C) 4)

Ishant returns to the attack. Rana gets an inside-edge in the second ball of the over, which beats the keeper and runs away to the long-stop fence. Ishant concedes a no-ball in the fourth ball of the over, though Rana can only get a single in the free-hit. Ishant falls again this innings after messing up in his delivery stride, and the crowd responds with boos. Ishant’s luck continues to be rotten as he misses out on a run-out chance in the final delivery of the over. Nine off the over.

Mumbai Indians need 114 to win from 54 balls.

10:59 PM (IST)

Guptill plucks one out of thin air with a one-handed catch at long on. The umpires check for a no ball, the big screen shows the replays, from the stands it looks as if Maxwell has overstepped. The entire Wankhede chants “no ball…no ball.” In unision. But the there is collective gust of grief as the third umpire confirms that it’s not a no ball. MI have lost two in succession. Both the set openers back in the hut. Keeping the momentum going will be a big challenge from here on.

10:58 PM (IST)

A stunner of a catch by Guptill in the deep.  Plucked it out of the air with one hand timing his jump to perfection. Disappointment in the Wankhede but soon it turns into appreciation.  The catch of the tournament for me. But looked like Maxwell was very close to have overstepped.  ‘No baaal, no baaal, ’ shouts the Wankhede., but the catch stayed.

10:56 PM (IST)

After 10 overs,Mumbai Indians 108/2 ( Nitish Rana 6 , Rohit Sharma (C) 1)

Maxwell into his second over. The KXIP skipper succeeds in getting the big wicket of Simmons after the latter tried whacking a full-toss over long-on, and it took a one-handed screamer by Guptill near the boundary to result in the second wicket. Another outstanding over by Maxwell, with just four coming off it.

Mumbai Indians need 123 to win from 60 balls.

10:54 PM (IST)

OUT! Outstanding one-handed catch by Guptill at long-on results in the end of Simmons’ stay at the crease! MI 106/2

Simmons c Guptill b Maxwell 59(32)

10:53 PM (IST)

Oh dear! Just when the fans had found their voice and livened up the atmosphere, Parthiv departs. 3 fours in a row from Parthiv and Wankhede had found the top of its voice. But then he departed next ball. There seems to be nothing in the pitch for the bowlers. The dew will make it even harder. KXIP bowlers need to make the most of Parthiv’s wicket and apply the choke.

10:51 PM (IST)

Parthiv goes over Ishant at short third man to get a boundary. Ishant had to be 10.feet tall to get that. Parthiv then goes on the other side of the keeper. But he falls in his bid to up the ante deceived by a slower one.

10:51 PM (IST)

After 9 overs,Mumbai Indians 104/1 ( Lendl Simmons 58 , Nitish Rana 4)

Mohit into his second over. FOUR! Cheeky stuff by Parthiv, as he shuffles to his left, and laps one towards the fine-leg fence! FOUR MORE! This time Parthiv gets an bottom edge that carries over third man. Hat-trick of fours in the first three balls, with Parthiv pulling the next one towards the fine-leg fence. He finally perishes, with the partnership falling short of the 100-run mark by a solitary run, as Parthiv miscues a back-of-length ball to get caught at mid-off, bringing Rana to the centre. Rana gets off the mark in the first ball that he faces, flicking the final ball of the over towards long-leg! 17 off the over!

Mumbai Indians need 127 to win from 66 balls.

10:48 PM (IST)

OUT! Parthiv finally gets dismissed after getting a hat-trick of boundaries, miscuing a back-of-length delivery from Mohit to get caught by Vohra near mid-off! MI 99/1

Parthiv c Vohra b Mohit 38(23)

10:45 PM (IST)

After 8 overs,Mumbai Indians 87/0 ( Lendl Simmons 57 , Parthiv Patel (W) 26)

The skipper himself into the attack now. Swing and miss for Parthiv in the first ball of the over. Simmons goes for a wild swing in the fourth ball and misses, and gets rapped on the thigh. Lbw appeal turned down as it was pitched outside leg. Inside edge for Parthiv in the following delivery, with Ishant saving a couple of runs while running towards the fine-leg fence. Tight over by Maxwell, giving away just five off it. MI, meanwhile, scoring at a rate parallel to that of KXIP.

Mumbai Indians need 144 to win from 72 balls.

10:44 PM (IST)

Simmons is on fire. He gets dropped but then adds insult to injury with a couple of sixes. Yet another fifty, he’s been an unsung hero for Mumbai Indians. The Caribbean flair in his shots makes him a joy to watch. The crowd is loving this now.

10:43 PM (IST)

And there comes the customary dropped catch. Mohit Sharma. What was he thinking? And Simmons takes advantage and brings up his fifty in quick time. Still a long way to go for MI.

10:41 PM (IST)

After 7 overs,Mumbai Indians 82/0 ( Lendl Simmons 57 , Parthiv Patel (W) 22)

Spin introduced at the end of the powerplay. DROPPED! Simmons holes out to Mohit at long-off, and the latter lets go of a million-dollar chance! How costly will that prove for the Kings XI? Looks like the dew played its part in the dropped chance. TWO SIXES for Lendl Simmons in the last two balls of the over, with the first one bringing up the half-century for the West Indian! 14 off the over!

Mumbai Indians need 149 to win from 78 balls.

10:40 PM (IST)

FIFTY for Lendl Simmons! He was dropped in the previous delivery, and brings up the milestone in the very next delivery he faces by coming down the ground and lofting it straight down the ground! MI 76/0

10:38 PM (IST)

Bowling has been average at best so far, they just haven’t been able to maintain any pressure. All the seamers used have been a bit too full, pitching right up into Simmons swinging arc. Even to Parthiv there have been too many loose full deliveries allowing him to free his arms.

10:38 PM (IST)

Two sixes in this over by Simmons.  ‘Muuumbai Muuumbai, ’ goes the Wankhede.  Mumbai have made good progress in the powerplay. They have a solid foundation now. Expect some fireworks in the remaining overs. MI will have to be wary of not leaving it for too late.

10:35 PM (IST)

After 6 overs,Mumbai Indians 68/0 ( Lendl Simmons 44 , Parthiv Patel (W) 21)

Mohit introduced into the attack in the final over of powerplay, and Parthiv guides the first ball towards midwicket to collect a single. SIX! Simmons goes huge, and slogs the second ball of the over towards long-on! Steers the third delivery towards backward point, with Guptill’s athleticism saving a couple of runs for KXIP. SIX! Outstanding timing by Simmons, as he loft drives a full delivery from Mohit over the extra-cover fence! Single off the last ball of the over, with 16 coming off it! Mumbai off to a cracking start in their reply! The umpire calls for the strategic timeout at the end of the over.

Mumbai Indians need 163 to win from 84 balls.

10:32 PM (IST)

After a couple of quiet overs. Simmons and Parthiv have changed the gears. Ishant went down on floor in his delivery stride after a couple of deliveries and a few of the fans uttered, “Ghabarla Bagh to” (See he got scared). 52 from 5 overs is just the sort of start MI needed but maintaining the momentum will be the key throughout.

10:30 PM (IST)

Low full toss from Ishant abs a copybook off drive for four by Simmons. ‘Full toss khelne ke liye balance bahut zaroori,’ says a voice in the crowd.  Meanwhile Ishant takes a tumble on his follow through. Some amusement for the crowd.

10:29 PM (IST)

After 5 overs,Mumbai Indians 52/0 ( Lendl Simmons 29 , Parthiv Patel (W) 20)

Ishant into his second over, and he vociferously appeals for an lbw at the start of the over. FOUR! Full and outside off, Simmons drives this one towards the long-off fence, before the West Indian collects a single off the next ball. Parthiv gets a top-edge in the fourth delivery that carries well over the keeper’s head to third man boundary! FOUR! Simmons brings up the 50-opening stand by guiding the last ball down towards the fine-leg boundary!

Mumbai Indians need 179 to win from 90 balls

10:24 PM (IST)

Bit of a lull in the stadium.  MI going just under 10 runs per over,  but the asking rate is steadily increasing.  The Punjab bowlers are on the mark again. Simmons hits a full toss straight to the fielder drawing some annoyed words from the crowd.

10:23 PM (IST)

After 4 overs,Mumbai Indians 37/0 ( Lendl Simmons 20 , Parthiv Patel (W) 15)

Sandeep into his second over, and starts off with a wide. Simmons beats the fielder at midwicket, and manages to get a couple of runs. Four by Simmons to end the over, with Simmons rolling his wrists to flick it towards the long-leg fence like a bullet! Eight off the over.

10:21 PM (IST)

Kings XI being put under pressure early, they need to respond and take regular wickets. Ishant’s last over was good and pegged the scoring back a little but wickets will be key. Mumbai have a strong batting line up, and on a flat pitch with dew now setting in they won’t be daunted by the score they are chasing.

10:17 PM (IST)

After 3 overs,Mumbai Indians 29/0 ( Lendl Simmons 14 , Parthiv Patel (W) 14)

Ishant into the attack in the third over of the innings, and starts off with a couple of dots. Simmons gets an inside edge off a short ball in the third delivery, which carries away to long-leg to get him a couple of runs. Short and wide in the fifth delivery, and Simmons uppercuts this one towards the third man fence! Decent over for Ishant though, with six coming off it.

10:15 PM (IST)

“Shottttt haiiii” the crowd went on each of the three cracking boundaries that Parthiv hit. Henry didn’t get his lengths right in that over and was punished. A breezy start for MI.

10:14 PM (IST)

A cracking shot through cover by Parthiv and then another one through point.  Could this be a match of the keeper-batsmen?

10:14 PM (IST)

A huge cheer goes up as Simmons starts off in style with a four. Mumbai will need a move on straightaway with a daunting target to chase and the opening stand will be crucial. In last match they suffered a rare top order failure and would be hoping it all comes back to normal.

10:13 PM (IST)

After 2 overs,Mumbai Indians 23/0 ( Lendl Simmons 8 , Parthiv Patel (W) 14)

Henry to bowl the second over. FOUR! First boundary for Parthiv, as he pulls the back-of-length delivery from Henry towards the midwicket fence, before driving the next delivery towards the cover fence. Makes it a hat-trick of boundaries with another sweetly-timed drive in the fifth ball of the over. Dot to end the over, with 13 coming off the over.

10:08 PM (IST)

After 1 overs,Mumbai Indians 10/0 ( Lendl Simmons 7 , Parthiv Patel (W) 2)

Just the ideal start for Mumbai Indians. Sandeep Sharma initiates his spell with a length ball on the pads, and Simmons helps it to the fine leg fence to get off the mark. Gets his line wrong on the next ball, bowls it down the leg side. On the fourth ball, Simmons tucks this good length delivery through square leg for a brace. Brings Parthiv Patel on strike on the next ball with a drive past the bowler. Sandeep offers Parthiv room but the southpaw cuts it straight to point. Patel nurdles the last ball through mid-wicket for a single. Decent beginning for Mumbai Indians, 10 off the first over.

10:06 PM (IST)

232 – WI v SA, Johannesburg, 2015

230 – Eng v SA, Mumbai, 2016

226 – Sussex v Essex, Chelmsford, 2014

Mumbai Indians are chasing 231 today.

10:06 PM (IST)

The Mumbai openers Simmons and Parthiv are already out in the middle and so are the Punjab fielders even as several of the spectators are yet to return to their seats after a mid innings break.  The IPL is fast and furious and hardly gives you time to catch your breath.  Meanwhile, MI have started with a first ball four.

10:04 PM (IST)

The Punjab players are out at the centre. Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel make way at the centre. Sandeep Sharma to start the proceedings for his side.

A pretty good total posted by KXIP, Saha and Guptill set the platform and then the former made sure he carried his bat through. He played some really clever shots enroute 92*.What was crucial was that the fact that never let the momentum slip amidst wickets falling at the other end. Guptill, Maxwell, Axar all played their part and helped built partnerships with Saha who was rock solid at the wicket. The wicket looks good for batting and hasn’t slowed down as expected. Still, much will depend on how MI tackle KXIP’s spinners.

Sensational knock by Saha, has led his side to a formidable total at the Wankhede. This pitch is an absolute road but take nothing away from the Kings XI batsmen they were magnificent. Started with Guptill and Saha going from ball one and the momentum built from there. Last time Kings XI made a big score against Mumbai they couldn’t defend it, they’ll be hoping the bowlers can deliver this time. Didn’t expect Saha to open the batting but he batted really well, regularly find the gaps and the ropes. Also liked Maxwell promoting himself, it almost turned into something big.

Malinga has gone for nearly 50 runs in his four overs. You do not see that too often,  do you?  As we speak Saha sends Hardik over the square leg fence to move into the nineties

After 20 overs,Kings XI Punjab 230/3 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 93 , Axar Patel 19)

Hardik Pandya to bowl the final over. SIX! Saha directs a full-toss over the midwicket fence to enter the 90s! Vicious bouncer by Pandya in the third delivery, with the ball falling short of Parthiv. The umpire signals one for the over. Wide off the fourth delivery. Axar hammers the last ball over long-on to end the innings with a six! 16 off the final over! Saha, meanwhile, remains unbeaten on 93 at the end of the innings.

Kings XI Punjab finish on 230/3 after 20 overs!

After 19 overs,Kings XI Punjab 214/3 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 85 , Axar Patel 12)

McClenaghan into his final over, and boy has he had a terrible time today. The Kiwi pacer gets his yorker right in the second delivery, with Saha getting only a single off it. Rana nearly pulls off a stunning catch at deep midwicket after Axar miscues an attempted slog. Wide conceded in the fifth delivery. Dot to end the over, with seven coming off it. Much better one for McClenaghan, who finishes with expensive figures of 1/54.

Punjab well past 200 and Saha in touching distance of his hundred.  What an innings it has been for him.  This would take some effort from the MI batters.

Hardik Pandya makes a diving stop at the long on fence, drawing a lot of cheer from the crowd.  Such a popular figure he is in Mumbai!

200 comes up for KXIP,  a warm applause from the crowd but then quickly they get behind Malinga as he runs in to bowl. MI already have a daunting task on their hands and they would want to restrict KXIP to somewhere around 220-225.

After 18 overs,Kings XI Punjab 207/3 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 83 , Axar Patel 8)

Malinga into his final over now. Full toss by the SL pacer at the start of the over, with Axar hammering it towards cow-corner to collect a double, and bring up the team 200. A much better over by Malinga though, with nine coming off it. Saha, meanwhile, is 17 away from his 2nd IPL century.

After 17 overs,Kings XI Punjab 198/3 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 79 , Axar Patel 3)

Bumrah into his final over, and Axar and Saha deal in singles in the first four deliveries. Saha clears mid-off in a well-timed strike. Bumrah then fires a yorker to sign off with a dot, and figures of 1/24 in his quota.

Well seems like there is a new thing called “flag waving Mexican wave” They are all getting up and waving the flags. There is a buzz all of a sudden inside the stadium.

After 16 overs,Kings XI Punjab 190/3 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 73 , Axar Patel 1)

McClenaghan starts his third over with a front-foot no-ball, which is also hammered over cow-corner by Marsh. Marsh though, gets a double in the free-hit. Saha pulls the back-of-length delivery towards the midwicket fence to enter the 70s. 17 off the over to go with Marsh’s wicket.

McClenaghan gives the fans something to cheer as he sends back Marsh. The crowd has been a bit quieter tonight. It looks like a good batting wicket and KXIP would like to cross 200 anyhow in this must win match.

Most runs scored by KXIP in middle-overs (7-15) in IPL-10:

102 v MI, Mumbai (WS)*

93 v MI, Indore

88 v RCB, Indore

With eight wickets in hand Kings XI have set themselves up perfectly for a huge final assault. Marsh is now well set and Saha is going great guns. On a flat wicket with some batting in the sheds it’s the perfect time to put the foot down and aim for a score around 220 or above. With dew set to be factor and the pitch already good for batting Kings XI will need every run.

Punjab are starting to look really ominous. Punjab have to be given credit for making an almighty dash for the play-offs. A 200-plus score will give the a massive cushion.  Not that they exactly need one,  given the way they choked the KKR’s awe-inspiring batting line up the other day.  And as we speak Malinga is hammered for a straight six by Saha. The pint-sized wicketkeeper batsman has set the stage on fire this evening.

OUT! Much-needed wicket for Mumbai, with Marsh getting an top-edge while looking to slog one towards long-on, with Parthiv running down from his position to take the catch. KXIP 183/3

Marsh c Parthiv b McClenaghan 25(16)

After 15 overs,Kings XI Punjab 173/2 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 67 , Shaun Marsh 17)

Malinga into his third over. Slower ball from Malinga in the second delivery, and Saha times his slog over long-off like a dream! Wide conceded in the third delivery. Keeps it tight for the remainder of the over, with only singles coming off it, as he concedes 12 off his 3rd.

Harbhajan has taken a bit of a pasting. He has conceded 24 in the last two overs. Saha and Marsh have maintained a good run rate and the question is whether they would look to go completely berserk now or wait for a couple of overs? Malinga is back, he gave away just 5 in his last over and built the pressure which resulted in Maxwell’s wicket. A good over is the need of the hour for MI here.

Most runs conceded by Harbhajan Singh in an IPL match:

45 v KXIP, Mumbai (WS), 2017*

44 v RCB, Mumbai (DYP),2010

44 v CSK, Mumbai (WS),2015

After 14 overs,Kings XI Punjab 161/2 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 59 , Shaun Marsh 14)

Bhajji into his third over. Saha gets his 9th boundary by hammering it down the ground, and beating the fielder at long-off after coming down the track. Marsh finally expresses himself in the fifth delivery, getting down on one knee and swinging his bat towards long-on. 14 off the over, with the umpire signalling for the second timeout of the innings.

A fantastic half century by Saha.  He took the attack to the opposition from the word go. Mumbai vs Punjab matches have always been close affairs and Punjab have made a very confident start here.  It hasn’t happened many times at the  Wankhede, but Mumbai are on the back foot.

After 13 overs,Kings XI Punjab 147/2 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 53 , Shaun Marsh 6)

Rohit sticks to spin from the other end, bringing Karn back for his 3rd over. Saha tries to loft the second ball of the over down the ground, with the ball travelling wide of Karn’s outstretched hand, though the batsman gets only a single. Decent over for Karn, as he gives away just 6 off it.

50 for Saha, he breaks the shackles with a six over long on off Harbhajan. He needs to make sure that KXIP don’t get bogged down. He was patting his right hamstring, KXIP would hope everything is okay.

Maxwell’s off stump goes for a jog as Bumrah goes wild in his celebrations. The tight last over from Malinga did the trick it seems. Just 5 runs off it and Bumrah bowled four good balls before Maxwell guided him through vacant slip cordon for a four. Maxwell again tried to give himself room for a slash but was beaten for pace. Saha too has slowed down a bit. Time for Mumbai to choke the scoring and exert pressure.

After 12 overs,Kings XI Punjab 141/2 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 51 , Shaun Marsh 2)

Harbhajan from the other end, and he bowls an over that is tighter than his 21-run first over. New batsman Marsh gets off the mark with a single in the 2nd delivery that he faces, before Saha dances down the track to smash Harbhajan over long-on to bring up his half-century. 10 off the over.

FIFTY for Wriddhiman Saha, and he comes down the track to smash Harbhajan over long-on to bring up the milestone! This is his first fifty of the ongoing tournament! He gets there in 31 balls, having hammered eight fours and a six.

After 11 overs,Kings XI Punjab 131/2 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 43 , )

Bumnrah returns for his third over, hoping to further tighten the scoring up with a tight one. Fires a 144 kmph back-of-length delivery to Saha in the third delivery, and appeals for an lbw, though it was too high for him. Maxwell gets an outside edge in the penultimate delivery which carries all the way to the third man fence, before getting his off-stump knocked over by a clever change of line and length by Bumrah in the last ball. Five runs and a wicket.

No no no Maxi!! Just when the captain looked like he was going to stamp himself on this year’s IPL he is dismissed by Bumrah. Maxwell looked like he was expecting something short and was beaten by length and a bit of pace. Still, his cameo has helped build a great foundation for Kings XI and given them plenty of impetus. They must score at least 220 from here, every new batsman must keep attacking.

OUT! Bumrah gets rid of Maxwell just when the latter looked to guide KXIP past the 250-run mark! He shortens his length this time, and the ball skids on to knock Maxie’s off-stump over! The Punjab captain looked to whack this towards the off-side after making room for himself, and ended up missing the line of the delivery completely. KXIP 131/2

Maxwell b Bumrah 47(21)

Maxwell is playing bit of a blinder here.  Has raced to 41 off a mere 14 balls. Saha giving him more than able company. Punjab are galloping along.  200 looks very much on the cards. Even more than that.

After 10 overs,Kings XI Punjab 126/1 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 43 , Glenn Maxwell (C) 43)

Malinga into his second over, and starts off with a wide delivery. Dot off the second ball, with Maxwell failing to connect to the yorker. Turns out to be a much better over from MI’s perspective, with just five singles coming off it, with Malinga firing in a couple of yorkers in this over. It will take Mumbai some terrific work now to restrict them to anything below 200.

Malinga bowls a yorker and the crowd gets super excited. As if , he’s taken a wicket. Well, they are used to see him do this virtually every ball,. so can’t blame them on that front.

Glenn Maxwell becomes the seventh Australian player to hit 200 sixes in T20 cricket. The others are David Warner, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Cameron White and Aaron Finch.

Maxwell has come out swinging (what did you expect?) And he’s put the Mumbai bowlers on the back foot right away. Finally the skipper is standing up for his side! Saha is a great foil for the Big Show, just quirky going about his business at a very good strike rate. Kings XI are on track for a mammoth score and they will need it – they will remember how Mumbai embarrassed them last time chasing over 190 in a canter.

Looks like Maxwell is looking to go for anything and everything. He swings the first two Harbhajan balls over the ropes and then goes for another swipe but mistimes it for a single. But he again gets onto the strike and hammers one over long on for 3rd six of the over. Is that hand injury bothering Harbhajan?

Least balls to 100 for KXIP in IPL:

45 v SRH, Hyderabad, 2014

48 v MI, Mumbai, 2017*

54 v RCB, Mohali, 2015

Mitchell McClenaghan becomes the first bowler to concede 50 fours in IPL-10. Basil Thampi has conceded 40 fours in IPL-10 which is the next most.

After 9 overs,Kings XI Punjab 121/1 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 41 , Glenn Maxwell (C) 41)

Harbhajan Singh introduced in the 9th over, and he too is greeted with back-to-back sixes, both hit towards the leg side. Maxwell then brings up the 50-partnership with his third six of the over, this time hammering it over long-on. 21 runs off the over, with KXIP threatening to cross the 300-run mark in this innings!

There is definitely some assistance for spinners on this track, a couple of Karn deliveries spin sharply and beat Maxwell’s wild swing. He , however, finally connected one off the middle to send it sailing over deep extra cover for a six. 100 up in 8 overs with just one wicket lost. Harbhajan gets a warm applause as he comes into the attack.

After 8 overs,Kings XI Punjab 100/1 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 40 , Glenn Maxwell (C) 21)

SIX! A helmet-less Maxwell gets into perfect position to slog the full-pitched first delivery for a six over long-on. Karn responds with two superb deliveries, the second one of which induces an appeal for stumping. SIX MORE in the penultimate delivery, with Maxwell going inside out over the wide long-off boundary. The team 100 comes up in the last ball, with Maxwell retaining the strike for himself for the following over. 15 off the over.

Well, Maxwell is batting with out a helmet and a cap. And as I type, he launches first one from Karn over long on for a six.

Saha has played a nice little knock here. He’s not let the bowlers settle, constantly shuffling inside the crease and using his feet. His placement and last minute adjustment has stood out. KXIP have made sure they haven’t lost momentum after Guptill’s wicket.

After 7 overs,Kings XI Punjab 85/1 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 40 , Glenn Maxwell (C) 6)

McClenaghan returns for his 2nd over. Slower ball from McClenaghan in the second delivery, and Saha cheekily laps it towards the fine-leg boundary. Maxwell gets an outside edge that carries past the keeper all the way to the third man boundary in the fourth delivery. Four to end the over, with Saha steering the wide delivery past short third man. Timeout signalled at the end of the over, with KXIP blazing away at the moment.

Highest powerplay scores for KXIP in IPL 10:

71/1 v MI, Mumbai*

62/1 v RCB, Indore

59/3 v SRH, Mohali

Glenn Maxwell has scored 73.76% of his runs in boundaries in IPL 10 which is the second most by any batsman who has atleast scored 200 runs in IPL 10 before today. He has hit 21 sixes and 17 fours in the tournament so far.

After 6 overs,Kings XI Punjab 71/1 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 31 , Glenn Maxwell (C) 1)

Spin introduced in the final over of powerplay. Guptill sweeps a fuller delivery towards the gap between short fine and backward square-leg, before hamming the next ball straight down the ground, getting back-to-back fours. Guptill tries slogging the third ball down the ground, but miscues this time, and ends up getting caught by Hardik. Another catching chance in the last ball, though the ball was too high and quick for Karn after being lofted over his head by Saha. 11 runs and the vital wicket of Guptill, and this turns out to be the highest powerplay score for KXIP this season. Meanwhile, Maxwell walks out to bat earlier than what he is normally used to this season.

Despite losing Guptill that’s an excellent powerplay for Kings XI. It’s imperative they keep attacking from here as they have nothing to lose, I like the intent of Maxwell coming in at three. Gives him a little bit of time before launching an assault, although knowing Maxwell he will go hard straight away and that could be what’s needed tonight.

Harbhajan is back into the field. Looks like there is a heavy strapping on his right wrist.

The crowd finally has something to cheer as Karn strikes in his first over to send Guptill back. There was a collective intake of breath while the ball was in the air but Hardik judged it well. Spin might play a crucial role here with the wicket getting slower as the tournament progresses. Maxwell has come out to the middle and he desperately needs to fire in this must-win match to keep KXIP alive.

Well, Harbhajan is receiving some treatment on his right wrist behind the boundary boards, near the dugout. He looks to be in some pain. Meanwhile,….the chants of Sachin…..Sachin…emanate from the Sachin Tendulkar stand. The crowd is a bit subdued so far may be because of the start KXIP have got. Buts just as I type that  Guptill departs

OUT! Karn finally gets a breakthrough for Mumbai after getting belted for runs, with Guptill skieing this one to Hardik Pandya near long-on while looking for another six. KXIP 68/1

Guptill c Hardik b Karn 36(18)

Fewest balls to 50 for KXIP in IPL:

17 v RR, Mohali, 2011

22 v SRH, Hyderabad, 2014

22 v MI, Mumbai, 2017*

23 v DC, Mohali, 2008

After 5 overs,Kings XI Punjab 60/0 ( Martin Guptill 28 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 29)

Bumrah back into the attack, and this time even he isn’t spared from the rain of boundaries, as Guptill makes room for himself and drives one past extra-cover. Bumrah responds with a bouncer in the next delivery. Misfield by Hardik at deep backward square-leg allows Saha to come back for a second run. Guptill tries going big over extra-cover in the last ball, but miscues, and the ball lands well short of the fielder in the deep. Nine off the over.

Bit of a surprise to see Saha opening ahead of Vohra but it’s proven to be a masterstroke with his presence at the crease seemingly easing the pressure on Guptill and the pair both taking the attack to the Mumbai bowlers. Both have gone hard early and got Kings XI off to the kind of start they needed. Saha is very good at using the pace and finding the gaps while Guptill will power the ball over the top.

Malinga comes in to bowl. ‘Go, go,  go Malinga, ’ says a section of the crowd.  But the Punjab batsman have gone after him.  ‘Aaj bhi 200 run hoga,’ laments some of the spectators. ‘Rohit,  isko change kar, ’ says another.  The comments are brutally honest and passion running high at the Wankhede.

Got to say, Saha and Guptill have played really good calculated cricket so far. Mumbai haven’t bowled badly but the two openers have manufactured their shots. After 4 Malinga balls which cost 19 runs, a fan shouts, “Mini over..mini over, isko change Kar.” Not the best of starts for Malinga but he ends with a couple of dots. A solid start for KXIP this.

After 3 overs,Kings XI Punjab 32/0 ( Martin Guptill 13 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 18)

Malinga from the Garware Pavilion end, and he lofts the first ball down the ground, and Rohit nearly pulls the ball over the boundary rope while trying to stop it. Massive six over the wide long-off fence, with Malinga overstepping at the same time. Wide conceded down the leg side in the third delivery. The Sri Lankan pacer tries a slower one in the 4th ball, but Saha calmly waits for the ball to arrive, and lofts it over extra-cover. The 50’s up KXIP in the very next deliverym as he pulls a shortish one towards the backward square-leg fence. Mega over for KXIP, with 19 coming off it.

Mumbai’s favorite – Lasith Malinga comes into the attack. Malinga…..Malingaaa the chants go. As I type, Guptill hammers one over long off for a six. Malinga hasn’t been at his best this season and Mumbai would like him to get into some form ahead of the qualifiers.

After 3 overs,Kings XI Punjab 32/0 ( Martin Guptill 13 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 18)

Bumrah into the attack in the 3rd over of the innings and he brings the run-rate down a tad with a controlled display that doesn’t allow the batsmen to go for anything more than the singles. Big appeal for a caught-behind in the last ball after Saha looks to defend a back-of-length delivery just outside off. Just three off the over.

Bumrah receives a rousing reception as he comes on to bowl. Chants of Boom boom Bumrah echo inside the stadium. Bumrah has been Mumbai’s lynching in the bowling department, be it at the start, middle or death overs. He has taken over the mantle from Malinga so far this season.

A new opening partnership for Punjab with Saha coming in to open with Guptill and Saha is on the offensive early on. Kxip have raced to 29/0 in 2 overs.

Bumrah comes in to bowl the next over.  Can he stem the run flow?  The reception is warm as usual.  " Boom Boom’ says the DJ. ’ Buuumrah, ‘says the Wankhede.

I have been informed by the security that it’s sold out today. Meanwhile Sachin Tendulkar has made his way to the dug out. It’s really humid inside the Wankhede, the sweat is literally dripping off from my face. Not been as vociferous as expected inside the Wankhede.

After 2 overs,Kings XI Punjab 29/0 ( Martin Guptill 11 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 17)

More boundaries for Saha, as he is offered width by McClenaghan, who is bowling the 2nd over, and deftly guides it towards the 3rd man fence. Back-to-back boundaries for the keeper-batsman in the last two deliveries, with the last one being called a no-ball, as he had disturbed the bails at the non-striker’s end. Saha though, swings and misses in the free-hit. Another expensive over, with 16 coming off it. Mumbai Indians leaking a lot of runs early in their innings.

After 1 overs,Kings XI Punjab 13/0 ( Martin Guptill 9 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 4)

Some start this for Punjab. Hardik Pandya began with a length delivery which was swinging away, Guptill goes low and slams the ball over covers for a boundary. Pandya follows it up with a dot. DROPPED! Tough chance goes down. Guptill has decided to take the attack to the opposition. Comes down the track and tries to go over mid off but only manages an outside edge. Harbhajan Singh leaps high up in the air, gets his finger tips to it but fails to hold onto it. Boundary taken. Guptill drives the next ball towards mid on for a quick single. Saha defends his first ball. Outstanding finish to the over. Saha cuts this good length ball through point for a boundary. 13 off the first over!

Mumbai not talking a chance with Krunal Pandya who had a little niggle and rightly so as he could play a crucial role going forward. Ishant is back for Punjab, the Wankhede track always has some bounce in it and he would be looking to make the most of it. Mumbai have had some close chases and with Rohit opting to bowl , signs are that dew might play some role.

The players are out at the centre. The umpires are making their way out in the middle. Martin Guptill and Wriddhiman Saha to open the inninings for Punjab. A forced change given that Hashim Amla has left for international assignments. Hardik Pandya will bowl the first over of the innings. Here we go….

We all know how Glenn Maxwell left his interview midway to hug Sachin Tendulkar after the 2015 CWC final. Surely, they aren’t talking about anything else but cricket here.

Another night, another must win game for Kings XI Punjab. The three spinner strategy proved successful against KKR but they’ve decided to drop one of them, Swapnil Singh, and replace him with big quick Ishant Sharma. Ishant has really struggled in the latter overs so Maxwell will be hoping he can have an impact up front. Once again they wanted to bowl first but have lost the toss and been put in to bat and the challenge will be on to post a defendable score against a formidable Mumbai side.

Ishant Sharma has bowled 84 balls in IPL-10 without taking a wicket which is the most by any bowler. Is this a good move to include him today?

Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab both have won three matches against each other at Wankhede in IPL.

KXIP XI: Martin Guptill, Manan Vohra, Shaun Marsh, Wriddhiman Saha, Glenn Maxwell (c), Axar Patel, Rahul Tewatia, Matt Henry, Mohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Sandeep Sharma.

Just one change to the KXIP squad, with the team management bringing in another ‘Sharma’ into the mix, with Ishant replacing the struggling Swapnil Singh.

MI XI: Lendl Simmons, Parthiv Patel, Nitish Rana, Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Karn Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, MItchell McClenaghan, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga.

Mumbai opt for a side that is unchanged from the one that lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 7 wickets.

TOSS: Mumbai Indians win the toss, and captain Rohit Sharma elects to field first (just usual business at the Wankhede Stadium).

The queues outside the Wankhede are starting to build up.

I am outside the Churchgate station, On my way to the Wankhede for Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab match. The excitement is same as the opening match. Fans are bargaining for jersey prices. Face painters are in full force. This is Mumbai’s last home match this season, however, there are high chances that they could return for the Qualifier 1 if they win one out of their remaining two matches. Wankhede have provided some thrillers and with KXIP in do or die situation, we could be in for a first contest.
