Hungarian Grand Prix: Daniil Kvyat on brink of race ban after impeding Lance Stroll during qualifying

Budapest: Russian Daniil Kvyat was handed a three-place grid drop and a penalty point on his super licence on Saturday for impeding Canadian rookie Lance Stroll during qualifying for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.

The penalty increases his tally to 10 in the last 12 months and leaves him within two points of a one-race ban.

Kvyat qualified 13th for Toro Rosso.

Stroll of Williams was on a flying lap in Q1 when he came behind Kvyat at Turn 11 of the Hungaroring circuit and was forced to go round his car.

In a radio message to his team, Kvyat said he was “blocked”. When Kvyat realised, he said he pulled across to the grass to make room for Stroll.

The stewards judged that Kvyat did not do enough to avoid impeding other drivers.

The Russian said: “I have to accept their decision. Unfortunately, we had a miscommunication with the team. The team didn’t tell me anyone was coming.”
