 "Former French tennis player Jerome Golmard succumbs to ALS, dies at 43")
Paris: Jerome Golmard, a former French tennis player who reached a career high ranking of No 22, has died. He was 43.
The French tennis federation said on Tuesday that Golmard died on Monday night.
Golmard announced three years ago that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease causing muscle paralysis and also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Golmard had launched a foundation helping victims of the disease and their relatives.
The left-handed Golmard won two ATP titles and represented France in the Davis Cup six times.
He won his first ATP World Tour title at the Dubai Tennis Championships and was the top French player for 14 weeks. His second title came at the Chennai Open in 2000.
Born in Dijon, France and based out of Boca Raton, Florida, he started playing tennis at the age of six.
