June 4, 1993: A slim, blonde legspinner announced himself to international cricket with the ‘Ball of the Century’ that stunned Mike Gatting and the rest of the cricketing world.
A drifting, turning vicious leg break that pitched well outside leg and whizzed past a clueless Gatting’s outside edge to clip the top of off.
Shane Warne had just produced magic with his first ball on England soil. “He’s started off with the most beautiful delivery. Gatting has absolutely no idea what’s happened to him and he still doesn’t know it,” an excited Richie Benaud shouted in the commentary box.
22 years on, on the same day, West Indies leg spinner Devendra Bishoo evoked memories of the ‘Ball of the Century’ as he cleaned up Brad Haddin with an absolute beauty on the anniversary of Shane Warne’s breathtaking delivery.
It was the 44th over of Australia’s first innings, Haddin was batting on 8 as Bishoo trundled in to bowl the last delivery of the over. Little did Haddin know that he was about to face a magic delivery. A couple of seconds later he was left stunned looking at the stumps. It was flighted on the leg stump, Haddin stayed rooted to his crease and looked to defend inside the line but the ball spun viciously past his outside edge to hit the top of off.
Social media erupted with comparisons of ‘Ball of the Century’. It was close but Warne’s delivery was just breathtaking considering the fact that it pitched way outside the leg stump. Bishoo finished with figures of 6/80 on day two of the first Test at Dominica.
15 yrs into 21st century & 22 since THAT ball, #Bishoo gives us a Warne-Gatting moment to castle Haddin. Ball of this century maybe? #WIvAUS

Are the people comparing Bishoo's ball last night to Warne's ball of the century drunk? Well controlled leg-break but c'mon! #cricket

Later, after the day’s play, Bishoo was lost for words while trying to describe the delivery. “Ah, I don’t know what to say. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed it very well,” he said.
Warne is an inspiration to many and Bishoo isn’t left behind. “Growing up I was looking up to Shane Warne. I watched a lot of videos with Shane Warne,” Bishoo added.
The hero of the day - Adam Voges who became the oldest debutant to score a Test ton, was full of praise for what people dubbed it as ‘Ball of 21st century’
“Yeah, it was a good ball wasn’t it? I think he bowled me a couple of them as well,” Voges said.
“Fortunately the ones I played and missed at spun enough to miss the stumps. That was a very good ball,” he added.
