India may not be the most progressive of countries when it comes to LGBT rights, but if the recent flash mob in the capital is anything to go by, more and more people are coming out in support of decriminalising homosexuality.

Sunday saw Delhi’s first LGBT flash mob at Connaught Place, one of the popular places in the city, presented by an organisation called Harmless Hugs. The mob saw several youngsters get together and attempt to put across the message of equal LGBT rights to the gathered crowd.

The performance began with the haunting Bandeh song by Indian Ocean and the troupe danced to some very apt Bollywood songs such as Bezubaan, Dil yeh Ziddi hain, Sadda Haq. The almost 10-minute performance was not only about dance, but also subtext, as it showed same-sex couples come together and be separated. This open portrayal of these homosexual couples sent a strong message across.

The spirited song-and-dance sequence gained approval from the onlookers as a crowd gathered around the performers. Many filmed it on their phones while others cheered them on. Several supporters also held up rainbow flags and banners with catchy messages like ‘Born This Way’ and ‘Dumbledore deserves his right’ (referencing the popular homosexual character from Harry Potter) We must say that the crowd’s enthusiastic reaction was encouraging.
