New Delhi: AAP leader Prashant Bhushan Friday urged Delhi’s Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to re-consider his decision of not recommending, to the central government, holding of early elections in the city which is under president’s rule.

The three-page letter comes a day after the Supreme Court said that Jung was not fettered by any time limit to review the decision to place Delhi under presidential rule but was free to dissolve the assembly, which is placed in suspended animation, before the expiry of the prescribed period of one year.

Arguing that the apex court had clarified that there was no impediment in revoking presidential rule at any point of time, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) urged Jung to hold a fresh election soon.

“We humbly request you firstly to invite the leaders of the BJP (which emerged as the single largest party in the Delhi assembly election winning 31 of the 70 seats) to ascertain whether they are inclined to form the government in Delhi…” the letter said.

“… if they express their inability, then you kindly reconsider your earlier recommendation of placing the assembly in a state of suspended animation, and take the appropriate decision in this regard, so that the citizens of Delhi can have a democratically elected government at the earliest,” the letter said.

Jung had recommended president’s rule after the AAP government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, quit in February over the defeat of the introduction of the anti-graft bill by the BJP and the Congress in the assembly.

Kejriwal too had written a similar letter to Jung 31 March.
