The seventh meeting of BRICS senior representatives on security issues was held in Beijing on 27-28 August. National Security Advisors (NSAs) from India, South Africa, Brazil and Russia attended the meeting. PTI
Hosted by China, the meeting was held to discuss ways to enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber and energy security. This meeting comes amid the Sikkim standoff between India and China. AP
Indian NSA Ajit Doval called on BRICS countries to show leadership on issues of regional and global importance, including countering terrorism, although there was no reference to the ongoing border dispute in his speech. Later, Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi held a separate meeting to discuss bilateral issues. AP
Chinese president Xi Jinping in his address praised the efforts of the BRICS nations in enhancing mutual trust and cooperation despite the vast geographical distance and different political systems among the member nations. AP
The NSAs meeting was held ahead of the 2017 BRICS Summit, which is scheduled to be held in Fujian province’s Xiamen city from 3-5 September and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the summit. AP
