The Lutyens Spice account, which created massive buzz in the Indian Twittersphere, with purported gossip from Delhi’s corridors of power, has shut itself down, citing “immense pressure from ’the agencies”.
The vague series of tweets did not give out further information, which left a puzzled Twittersphere wondering what happened and who on earth ’the agencies’ were.
The account created quite a buzz since its arrival in October, garnering nearly 20,000 followers in little over a month. Given its anonymity, the credibility of its tweets could have been questioned.
The handle would tweet out gossipy chunks of information pertaining to politicians, media organisations and other popular personalities and had garnered a fairly cult following, although it was frequently criticised as being too ’liberal’.
There have been many theories about who was behind the account, but no one has come forward and claimed responsibility. Meanwhile the reactions to the Lutyens Spice closure ranged from gloatingly happy to disappointed and outraged. Here are some of them:
