President of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Club N Srinivasan has agreed to lift the ban on dhotis at the club after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa promised to revoke licences of clubs that enforce a dhoti-less dress code.

Jayalalithaa had also said that the ban was a mockery of Tamil culture and a bill was underway to ensure that the dhoti gets due respect.

The TNCA came under fire after refusing to allow Madras High Court judge Justice Hariparanthaman entry to a book release hosted at the club since he was wearing a dhoti. The rules of the club state that only members or guests dressed in full trousers, shirts or T-shirts with collars and leather shoes are allowed in its premises.

Justice Hariparanthaman responded by saying that he could not accept this after over 60 years of independence.

Earlier, the Madras High Court had directed its registry to post a PIL seeking regulation of various clubs and questioning the dress code imposed by them.

A senior official is also quoted in the report as saying that the ban on dhotis was nothing but an attempt to prevent wardrobe malfunction under the influence of alcohol.
