The first International Yoga Day was a lot of things — India set two new Guinness World Records for Yoga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined thousands at the Rajpath and performed yoga for half an hour, BJP leader Ram Madhav stirred a controversy over Vice President Hamid Ansari’s absence which backfired because it turns out Ansari was not invited in the first place! And as we saw several leaders from different parties contour themselves into various poses, DMDK chief Vijaykanth was one of them. Though he was a good sport, he may not have been able to master the art, in what looked like his first ever try at the ancient practice.

With a huge poster of him performing an asana in the background, the DMDK leader on Sunday led almost 100 party workers and showed them how it’s done. Or may be not. The video opens with a shaky Vijaykanth, wearing his trademark all-white clothing, slowly inching towards the stage where a young boy performs asanas perfectly. Vijaykanth stops to watch the young volunteer and shakes his head as if its cake walk. But when he actually tries to do the poses, he finds out the hard way, that yoga indeed needs a lot of practice.

The clueless DMDK chief is seen looking around to understand what is happening. Once he has figured which way to look, Vijaykanth takes help from a fellow volunteer and learns how to sit straight! Everything else goes down hill from there. The DMDK chief attempts a simple breathing exercise after that, but wait a minute… he doesn’t know which nostril to press and which to release. So, there is this awkward moment when he pauses to stare at his own fingers.

Speaking to The New Indian Express, Vijayakanth said, “Everyone must do yoga because it is a way to keep healthy and attain peace. I have done 108 padmasanams regularly earlier in life and this is one of the reasons for my fitness. Yoga is Peace.”

Vijaykanth is right, yoga is peaceful. But we don’t know whether what he did on stage can be called yoga at all.

Throughout the seven minute laughter-riot, the DMDK leader, flinches, winks, staggers, almost-falls and attempts teaching yoga to his 100-or-so party members.  Watch the entire video here.
