New Delhi: Street Vendors should be aware of the provisions of the street vendors act and should remain vigilant and proactive in getting the law implemented, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said here Wednesday.

The vendors across country should take services of the Legal Services Authority in getting their rights enforced, he said at the national conference of street vendors organised by National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI).

“Street vendors must be aware about the various provisions of the Street Vendors Act and should be vigilant and pro-active in getting the law implemented,” Prasad said.

The Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vendors Act 2014, was passed by the erstwhile UPA government and came into force 1 May, 2014.

Arbind Singh of NASVI said despite the bill being passed its non-implementation was causing great problems and police and civil authorities were still harassing the vendors.

Prasad, however, assured street vendors that the BJP government was committed to the implementation of the act.

The conference was also attended by street vendor leaders from Asian countries and they deliberated on how to take the Indian law to other Asian countries.
