According to a report in The Times of India, Piyush had earlier told the police that Jyoti had been abducted by motorcycle-borne men when the couple was returning from a restaurant named Carnival at 12:30 am on Sunday. Piyush claimed that the two men went away with Jyoti and Piyush’s Honda Accord. Police found the car at around 1:30 am with Jyoti’s body inside the Accord.

However, Piyush himself later confessed to the police that his previous story had been fabricated. He also confessed to planning his wife’s murder. “After a thorough interrogation, Piyush confessed that he had conspired to kill his wife with the help of Awdhesh and Renu,” said Ashutosh Pandey, IG, Kanpur, in the report.

Another report in Hindustan Times said that Piyush allegedly murdered his wife because he was having an extra-marital affair with a neighbour, who is reportedly pregnant and had been urging Piyush to marry her. She is currently being questioned by the police.

The HT report also says that on the night of the murder, Piyush told Jyoti about arranging a driver for a long drive. While Awdhesh,  one of the accused, was driving the Accord, Awadhesh’s aide, Renu Kanaujiya, accompanied them in the car.

Between the CS Azad University and Rawatpur stretch, Awadhesh reportedly stopped the car and stabbed Jyoti 17 times. The car was eventually abandoned and Piyush went back to his home and destroyed evidence before filing a complaint at a nearby police station, according to the report.

The report also says that Jyoti had been suspecting that Piyush was having an extra-marital affair. She had complained to her parents-in-law that her husband would disappear between 1 am and 4 am every night.
