Modi meets US NSA HR McMaster; hold talks on terrorism, Afghanistan stability

New Delhi: US National Security Adviser (NSA) Lt Gen HR McMaster on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for talks on terrorism and issues related to Afghanistan stability.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval also attended the meeting at Modi’s official 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence, according to a handout picture released by the External Affairs Ministry.

Sources said they discussed security issues concerning the South Asian region and how to better cooperate on countering terror threats emanating from Taliban and surging Islamic State presence in Afghanistan.

McMaster arrived on Monday evening, the first visit by a senior official of President Donald Trump’s administration.

On his South Asian trip that began over the weekend, McMaster on Monday visited Pakistan where he met civilian and military leaders, stressing “the need to confront terrorism in all its forms”

Earlier, he also visited Afghanistan to review efforts at stabilising Afghanistan.
