Terrorist attack in J&K's BSF camp highlights: Another terrorist killed; Srinagar airport operations begin

A Border Security Force (BSF) camp, adjacent to strategic airforce station and Srinagar airport, was attacked by terrorists early on Tuesday.

Srinagar Airport operations begin

In another development, the airport operations too have started. Speaking to the director of the Srinagar airport, CNN News18 reported that the first flight from Air Asia has left Delhi at 8.50 am and will reach Srinagar at 10.10 am.

Another terrorist killed by security forces

According to CNN News18, another terrorist, who was hit during the encounter, has died. The report also added that the encounter is almost over now.

Rajnath Singh calls for high-level meeting

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has called a high-level meeting at 11.30am today to discuss J&K issue,  News18 quotes ANI as saying.

Passengers now allowed inside airport

According to CNN News18, the anti-terror operation is nearing its end. While airport services are yet to resume, the authorities are allowing passengers to enter the airport to avoid any inconvenience.

Decision to resume operations to be taken later

According to ANI, the decision of resuming air traffic would be taken by Airports Authority of India and concerned airlines.

Speaking to The Economic Times , a resident of Friends Colony located outside the Airport. said, “There was continuous firing going on for at least 55 minutes. And all of us squeezed in one room for safety. Then the sirens blared out making the situation tenser."

Body of militant found, identity to be ascertained

Director General of Police SP Vaid said a body suspected to be that of a militant was found. The identity is yet to ascertained, News18 reports.

BSF says half the work is done

Sources in the BSF told CNN News18 that at least half of the work in the ongoing anti-terror operation has been completed and that they will be “ending the encounter soon.”

One militant killed, reports suggest

According to CNN News18, the encounter began at around 4.20 am. After a bitter gun battle between the security forces and the militants, one of them was killed at around 7.35 am. However, the troops have not been able to retrieve the body of the militant.

The attack took place at 4.00 am and exchange of firing was going on between the militants and security forces, they said. 

The terrorists are holed up inside the building campus of the 182nd Battalion camp, BSF officials said.

Attack on BSF battalion an intelligence failure?

According to a India Today TV report, there was an intelligence input on a possible attack on the BSF camp outside the highly-guarded area around airport.

The vicinity of the encounter is heavily guarded

No casualties have been reported so far from the encounter site, which is located in one of the most fortified areas of Kashmir.Besides the only civilian airport, the technical airport used by Armed Forces and VIPs is also in the vicinity. The area also houses training centres of the BSF and CRPF.

Shujaat Bukhari, a senior journalist based out of Srinagar, tweeted that airport staff have been allowed to enter the airport. 

Militants attacked BSF administrative block

News18 reports, the terrorists targeted the administrative block of BSF’s 182nd battalion, located just outside the main gate of the airport, a police official said. The terrorists are believed to be holed up inside a building in the campus of the 182nd Battalion camp.

The speculation of a Jaish hand in the attack is due to the fact that the militant organisation is known for such fidayeen attacks, CNN News18 reported.

Area around airport cordoned off 

According to CNN News18, the area around the Srinagar airport has been cordoned off by the secuirty forces. The passengers who were to board early morning flight shave been stranded, while the whereabouts of the militants are yet to be ascertained.

One terrorist gunned down by BSF

ANI is reporting that at least one of the terrorist has been killed by the security forces. In addition, three BSF jawans have been critically been wounded.

Morning flights were cancelled

Morning flights from Srinagar airport were cancelled, with staff and passengers being stopped at Humhama chowk a few kilometres before the entrance of the airport.

Inspector general of police Muneer Khan told Hindustan Times suspicious movement was noticed in the Humhama district after gunshots were heard. While security forces closed the road leading up to the airport, Khan said the facility was secure.

No information about the number of terrorists who are holed up inside the building

Three BSF jawans injured

Reports said three BSF jawans were injured in the terrorist attack at BSF’s 182 battalion on Tuesday morning. According to CNN-News18, Srinagar airport cancelled flights and sealed off the area following the attack.

‘Firing, which began at 4.15 am, is still on’

A Srinagar-based journalist on social media said that the firing that started around 4.15 on Tuesday morning is probably still on.

3-4 terrorists stormed BSF camp

Passenger, vehicle or employee not allowed to go towards Srinagar airport

Following the attack on BSF camp near Srinagar Airport, no employee or passenger or vehicle is being allowed to go towards the airport, ANI reports.

Terrorists tried to barge inside camp at 4.30 am on Tuesday

At 0430, terrorists tried to barge into BSF bn campus. ANI reported that the attack was retaliated. However, terrorists are holed up in building inside campus and firing is on, BSF sources have told ANI.
