Scientists at the Junagadh Agricultural University have claimed that there are traces of gold in the urine of Gir cows.

You heard that right. After four years of research, scientists at the university claimed that the analysis of 400 Gir cows done at the Food Testing Laboratory revealed traces of gold, ranging from 3 mg to 10 mg, found in one litre of cow urine, reported News18 .

The gold was reportedly found in ionic form, which is gold salt soluble in water. “We’ve been researching on cows for the last four years. As scriptures describe, we tested the samples on Kapil Plasma Unit and the range of gold as 3 to 10 milligrams per litre. It has been repeatedly tested and the gold has been isolated, precipitated and melted,” the report quoted scientist BA Golakia as saying.

Golakia also said that the cow urine contained 5,100 compounds, which included 388 with medicinal properties. The range of gold found varied according to the age of the cow and the feed it had consumed, he said, adding that calves have the maximum amount of gold in their urine and that morning urine samples have better gold content than the evening samples.

“Nine compounds are anti-cancer and 14 compounds help against mental ailments,” Golakia further told News18.

Another report in The Times of India said that the scientists also analysed urine samples of camels, buffaloes, sheep and goats but did not find anti-biotic elements in them.

The report added that Junagadh Agricultural University’s Food Testing Laboratory, which makes this surprising claim, is accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and conducts 50,000 tests on various products every year on an average.
