Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi was on Monday arrested in a case of alleged assault on Congress leaders last week but enlarged on bail.

Owaisi, Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, surrendered before Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Zone) V Satyanarayana, following which he was examined by a police team, arrested and taken to a government hospital for medical examination.

Later, he was produced before a local court, which granted him bail, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Mirchowk division) S Gangadhar said.

“The court granted him bail on furnishing two sureties of Rs 5,000 each,” the ACP said.

Owaisi and some of his supporters had been booked for their alleged involvement in an attack on Congress MLC Shabbir Ali and other party leaders on February 2 during the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls.

Offences were registered against him and others under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation), among others.

Telangana Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy and Ali had alleged that MIM workers led by Owaisi had attacked them. A vehicle belonging to Reddy was damaged too. Ali had also claimed he suffered injuries below the right eye and elsewhere during the alleged assault.

Some MIM activists were also arrested in connection with the incident but later enlarged on bail.

Cases were also registered against Reddy, Ali and some others for allegedly assaulting MIM activists.
