Watch: This rap video by pregnant hijabi Mona Haydar makes a point about Islamophobia, feminism

The latest video ‘Hijabi’ by Mona Haydar, an activist from Michigan known to fight issues faced by people in the Muslim community, addresses the discrimination that women who wear hijabs face.

The video features several women of colour wearing swaying and dancing to music, including Haydar who is eight months pregnant. Most of them are young and a handful are middle-aged, but the common feature across all of them is their hijab, which they seem to wear with pride and confidence.

In the video, Haydar talks about the common questions she is asked by people about her hijab. “What that hair look like, don’t that make you sweat? Don’t that feel too tight?” are the ones she raps about. She insists that such people get a life, and that she will continue to wrap her hijab and “swagging” with her fellow hijabis despite what people say.

She talks about how she and the rest of the women who choose to wear the hijab were born in the Eighties and makes references to Middle Eastern culture like Kuwait and the river Euphrates to describe their personalities. She mentions that they are “teleporting through trauma” of discrimination.

Her brand of feminism is inclusive and includes women of all sub-sects in Islam and across different countries. “Make a feminist planet, women haters be banished. Covered up or not, don’t take us for granted,” she asserts.

In the past, Mona Haydar has spoken about being a woman of colour and also started the initiative ‘Ask a Muslim’ with her husband to start a dialogue about the religion.
