Forty-five days after it released in China, the Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal has crossed Rs 1,200 crore in box office collections.
Dangal’s runaway success in the land of the dragon has evoked much surprise, although previous Aamir Khan films — such as PK and 3 idiots — have done well there too.
However, the scale of Dangal’s popularity in China is unprecedented.
In a report dated 20 June 2017, the trade website KoiMoi.com provided the following break-up for Dangal’s box office collection in its seventh week in China:
China — Rs 1,198 crore; Taiwan — Rs 41 crore; other overseas territories — Rs 202 crore. Added to the India gross of Rs 542.34 crore, Dangal’s total collection amounted to Rs 1,983.34 crore.
This makes Dangal a near shoo-in for the Rs 2,000 crore club — a feat no other Indian film has achieved thus far.
Meanwhile, SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is just shy of the Rs 1,700 crore mark. There is some speculation at this time that Tubelight’s release on 23 June could end Baahubali 2’s epic run at the box office. However, Baahubali 2 is still to release in China, which should add to its collection.
Back to Dangal — the film is now Disney’s fourth highest earner worldwide for 2017 . It follows Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Pirates of the Caribbean and Beauty and the Beast in the rankings, the Indian Express reports.
